Professional sports in general want it this way

Baseball, hockey, basketball....all of them want the "big names" with big fan bases to do well, but while also keeping the remaining teams in the conversation (i.e., in the playoff hunt).

This leads to the most money coming in from all sources (merchandise, ticket sales, etc.)

At least, that's my hypothesis and I'm sticking to it.
