Tough to rush the passer when they were dinking and dunking - I think they needed to blitz more -but on the other hand is there a worse defense on 3rd and long? Shanahan took advantage of the Rams D because they gave up the short passes. As you said, Shula adjusted the D for a short period by blitzing and not allowing those short passes. IN OT, the Rams went back to the 4 man rush and playing coverage a little deeper. The Niners took advantage of that on a shorter field via Karty. The D stiffened up again once they were in FG range. Too late.
This was Shula's worst game so far. He let Mac Jones pick them apart by not applying pressure using just a 4 man rush which wasn't working. He needed to adjust much quicker instead of allowing us to be behind 14-0. We come back to tie, then the same crap defensive scheme again allowed the Niners to take advantage of it and the lead.
Yes, we need better CB play. When we apply pressure, our secondary seems to play more loose and opportunistic. The 4 man rush wasn't working and the Niners took advantage of the soft zone coverage.
