Just for fun. I am no expert and am no better than an informed fan.
Why do teams always, aside from goal line situations, play 5 offensive linemen? Would there be an advantage to putting 6 out there, particularly in terms of running the ball?
Probably it is at least partially because even finding 5 starting-level OL is hard enough. They don't have extras.
But we have a high level OL just sitting on the bench making a lot of money. My crazy idea for today is - why not open the game with 6 OL, and just commit to running the ball down MNs throat until they stop us. Could this work? It would certainly be unexpected.
We could do a 6-man line. One of Kyren's best assets is his patience -at times he reminds me of how Leveon Bell used to pause behind the line of scrimmage, allow a hole to develop and then hit it hard. I have seen Kyren do this quite a bit. Just imagine if we have one more great run blocker out there - we could double team one side of the DL, attack the LBs and make it easy for KW to get to the second level.
Or - we could put Avila, who is great at blocking in space, at FB and let him clear out the holes.
I know this is all fantasy - but would that work? Why or why not?
