Stumbled upon this conversation between some guy and Steve Smith, breaking down Xavier Smith's game.
Steve emphasizes
body control as an imp[ortant element in any tier 1 WR's game, and cites several clips where X exhibits it. He also mentions 4.38 speed - when X is listed as 4.4. If he's actually 4.44 he's not exactly slow; at 4.38 he's right there with Tutu. Where did the 4.38 come from? is it legit?
More important than raw 40 speed, Steve emphasizes about X that he has
another gear and also mentions his
route running. After the catch, Steve says when X has the ball in his hands he's
headed for the goal. He's dangerous once he makes the catch. And in the video, he does a nice job of corraling a back-shoulder throw that would have gone down as an incomplete or PBU in favor of the defender against a less aggressive wide receiver.
This is an interesting watch right now, given X's impressive pre-season game performances. He looks, to my eye and limited viewing, to be bearing out all Steve Smith says about him.
What say you guys? I didn't watch either game - just highlights, and highlights can be deceiving. Dialogue much appreciated
