Could be what you say, they don't think Kinchens will be ready. Hard to think that because camp has not started
Could be Yeast and/or Kendrick not looking great at star/nickel ... meaning Lake may remain there ...Had Yeast and or Kinchens looked great they could have freed up Lake to play safety next to Curl.
Or --- none of that. Maybe they see Curl playing more star or even dime linebacker (where he played on 3rd downs last couple of years) .. before that he was kind o a "big nickel" or star ...
So, if Curl is at dime LBer ... and Lake is at star/nickel --- who plays safety in the nickel/dime defenses?

Adding Johnson as a potential contingency would be smart in that case.
I agree, there is something they are doing, but we can all speculate but the answer is not knowable at this point.

I would guess that confidence in Kendrick is probably low at this point. He is just too slow to be playing NFL football at a high level, IMO.
