I'm not signing the guy for depth. They have some concerns.

Could be what you say, they don't think Kinchens will be ready. Hard to think that because camp has not started

Could be Yeast and/or Kendrick not looking great at star/nickel ... meaning Lake may remain there ...

Had Yeast and or Kinchens looked great they could have freed up Lake to play safety next to Curl.

Or --- none of that. Maybe they see Curl playing more star or even dime linebacker (where he played on 3rd downs last couple of years) .. before that he was kind o a "big nickel" or star ...

So, if Curl is at dime LBer ... and Lake is at star/nickel --- who plays safety in the nickel/dime defenses?

Adding Johnson as a potential contingency would be smart in that case.

I agree, there is something they are doing, but we can all speculate but the answer is not knowable at this point.
