Although he did grade much better than Woods last season in run blocking. Chew on that.
Atwell is not just doing "his thing". He learned each of the X, Y and Z positions last year. Professor Gadget? - I think not.
I would have to see what was asked of Woods. Not all blocks are the same. I gave examples of what run blocking is and how Rams
deeply their receivers and Atwell is not part of that kind of scheme ... he runs his routes and in run blocking he kind of gets in the way of his guy and dances
As far as PFF grades --- I don't know what the protocol is for WRs. If may be that if he stands in front of his guy and he does not make a tackle he get's a "plus" or a "no grade" and if he misses it's a "minus".
A guy can great a plus on a run away from the point of attack. Just like a QB can get a good grade for a 3-yard completion.
You need to face it, you are overflowing how good this guy is. You like him, I get it. But you cannot make the case he is a good blocker at a position you don't know how they are graded.
A good blocking WR has to have some strength, even if he's small, good positioning, good technique, timing, leverage and all those things. Remember this, PFF does grades --- not evaluations. Those things are not the same. Sorry tp be the one to break it to you --Atwell does not evaluate as a good blocker
Robert Woods was a great blocker, one of the best we've seen, It was his calling card. He'd motion into the middle of the formation and block a linebacker of even a defensive end ...
Atwell does none of that.
If that is "labeling" well, so be it. He's a gadget player ... who even when he was filling in didn't get a lot of snaps... the most snaps he ever had in a game was 31 --- in a game where starters were being rested. Lat years closer. The weeks prior he was only played 8-10 snaps a game. And even when he filled in for Kupp -- when Kupp was out he'd only play 15, 20-22 snaps
That is the very definition of a limited player ...
I am sorry, I just cannot be gaslit into thinking he's as good as you think he is. I have my own opinion and my opinions do not come from from just one thing --- I look at stats, I look at facts, I look at what I see, I look at what coaches have said, I look at PFF ... and then form my opinion.
I do not think he's a good blocker. I don't think he plays to his speed, I don't think he's been worth a 2nd round pick. But I also am not one of the people who uses the word "bust".
I am being fair with him.
again--- Curious --- why don't you argue with people who say he's a "bust" or who say he's going to no make the team in 2024?
