Watch Avila win the position over them both, lol!
and guard is a more important position in terms of how teams play defense especially on passing downs.
If a team is in a 4-man line, which they do the vast majority of the time, the center does not have someone
over him---the guards do, one on an outside shoulder on on the inside shoulder and the center
helps one of them - in the most common protection.
Why have someone who is as good as Avila helping when he can be the guy blocking someone over him
and not need the help. So then your center knows who to help every time...he knows Avila will lock his
guy--look the other way.
It would be a misuse of resources. Like playing a left tackle at right tackle, he can do it, he would be better
but leaves a hole at left tackle.
What matters a lot on oline is working together, and that was the issue last year, too many combinations
no ability to know what the guy next to you can do.
And that is Allen's biggest weakness, gets hurt.
But when all 5 were healthy, and knew each other's tendencies--they go to Super Bowl.
I would be fine with Avila starting his career at center, as long as the guards are solid
but I want him blocking the good defensive tackles one-on-one, not helping a
others block their guys.
On running plays the center does have a guy over him, but so does a guard. So
there Avila would be great . . .but he'd be great at guard to. So guard is a win-win.
You get his skill as both a run and pass blocker
At center you get his skill as arun blocker but only half his abilities as a pass blocker
