I remember reading stats last year that pointed out that the running game performed better when Shelton played center over Allen.

This is the closest actual reason why that I've heard yet. Not sure how true it is either but interesting anyway.

It's hard to bash Allen to harshly with the Super Bowl win, but he's an easy target when he's hurt all the time.
