In that 86, the Offense was pretty poor....for both teams that night. But THE big play was what exposed the 46 Defense.....Dills bomb to Ron Brown for the long TD. That was all that was needed to beat the 46.....Drop back and let it fly. The Bears brought so many guys to kill the QB, it left their DBs on an island. The Dolphins exposed it in 85 and won. People have told me..... Well, Marino had a gun and a quick release!! Yes he did. But what about the Bucs???? Look at the box scores of the Bucs vs the Bears in 85. Though they lost both games, they put up GOOD numbers.
I never understood WHY it took the NFL so long to figure out the 46 Defense. It really was not Rocket Science to end it.
Your post compelled me to go back and watch that game. I'd forgotten that Ellard had held out and was just extended before this game, and he had an absolutely miserable game. Three or four dropped passes and a fumbled punt. Defense did enough to keep them in the game and pull it out.
