He had a few bright spots and showed well as a reserve receiver, but it's not like he was a gamebreaker. Totally replaceable. Someone who can return kicks and punts might be a better idea.
I'll worry when the other team kicks to us on opening day and there's no one back there.
This is a fair assessment of Powell.
But with so many key players leaving this off-season, I cringe when I see non-spectacular, non-expensive
(yet stable) pieces leave as well.
And when you say that Powell is "totally replaceable..." that SHOULD be true.
But do you remember what that punt return unit looked like before he arrived mid-way through the 2021 season? Tutu fumbling. Someone else (Skow or Koski?) fumbling. And Kupp fair catching everything. I think the only thing worse than our punt return unit was our punt coverage unit.
Though unspectacular, Powell settled that unit down overnight. We KNEW he was going to field the punt cleanly and pick up the yards that could be picked up. No more losing yards or (in Kupp's case) not getting any yards. He just made sure the offense touched the ball. No drama.
Why this organization couldn't seem to get something so fundamental right is beyond me.
Are you ready for Tutu to field punts again?
