I did not go back and look--I just made up
the routes here---don't even know if they
would work
but a reason of off coverage many times
is mesh concepts and switch releases
if you play up/press and receivers cross
defenders get picked off
that is why they are called pick plays
cushions and matching concepts
allows defenders to match the routes
and play downhill from there
gives up short stuff but prevents
chunk plays
We can not like it, but it's a philosphy

A philosophy with merit. I believe it also depends on the abilities of the secondary. It's a philosophy that Shanahan has exploited to perfection, at least against us. That being said, ideally, having corners that CAN play press and fight through picks has to be an advantage. I don't know that any team has more than 2 such players. On the Rams, only Ramsey would be capable- but he can be smoked deep if the QB has time.
I think the frustration is that playing off, with Shanahan exploiting it, renders Donald useless. He's doubled & the ball is out before he can make a difference. Against SF, I'd like to see us press a lot more, & force Purdy (or whoever) to hold the ball a tic more.
