I think he knows that but he simply may not have the players on the LOS who can dominate
IDK Waterfield...I have some questions about the type of player McVay wants on his OL.
Hear me out...
When McVay arrived on the scene for the 2017 season, the Rams had 3 of their starting O-linemen set: LG Rodger Saffold (6-5, 324-lbs); RG Jamon Brown (6-4, 340-lbs); and, RT Rob Havenstein (6-8, 330-lbs). Via free agency, the team acquired LT Andrew Whitworth (6-7, 331-lbs) and C John Sullivan (6-4, 312-lbs). No matter how you cut it...that's some serious beef. And with Todd Gurley at RB, we straight-up smashed people (and that's with a HC who really doesn't care to run the ball).
But what happened after that?
Well, Brown took a couple of puffs of Mary Jane and got suspended for the first couple of games of 2018. In steps Austin Blythe at RG. Though game, Blythe was a lightweight checking in under 300 #'s. Brown never regains his spot. No problem though, right? Because we're going to the Super Bowl. Uhhh...BIG PROBLEM as Sully (who was the lightest before Blythe), Havs, and Blythe get repeatedly (and embarrassingly) TRUCKED the entire game by the Patriot D-line.
That should've been a warning sign for McVay.
But what happens after that?
Well, McSnead starts to do some weird stuff.
First, they decline to resign Saffold - big mistake. They then try to replace him with a LT (Noteboom). 'Boom isn't cut out for interior work and promptly gets hurt.
Sully moves on and gets replaced by an even smaller C (Brian Allen) who gets hurt halfway through the season.
And undersized Blythe is still there at RG.
Under McSnead, the Rams have unilaterally gone smaller with their OL.
McVay simply doesn't believe in roadgrader-types who will control the LOS.
