Let’s consider this opportunity from the pov of the prospects.
If you were a hot up-and-coming OC candidate, OR a quality seasoned and respected veteran, would YOU be doing backflips over being a virtual yes-man for McVay that isn’t even allowed to call plays?
Conversely, just how much would such an ‘OC’ be taking off McVay’s plate and reducing his stress level?
See where I’m going with this? Looks like more of ‘22 ‘same old-same old’ to me.
I like your thinking here, so I'd also like to expand it a bit. I think it would be more stressful for Sean to hand over playcalling duties like Andy Reid did because of how McVay is wired. If he could learn to manage that type of stress (giving away the role he loves most), he could be free to turn those energies elsewhere.
I noticed this thread is missing an enormous success story that McVay produced and should offer confidence to fans today. Brandon Staley. Not from the Shanny tree. Off the grid...a position coach. Defensive side of the ball. On the flip side, he did sign on the Bonamego hire soooooo...there is a range. The point is, he's able to scour beyond his personal circle of influence and recognize genius that only those who truly have it will recognize. I find our fan hubris of how to advise Sean to organize the team, well....hilarious. And I will continue to lean into it because it's fun. But I remember scratching my head over Staley and once again when Staley introduced a whole new level of Fangio structure. I would bet my house the spark happened when the two of them batted ideas back and forth and Sean realized he was playing chess with a formidable opponent. Uncovering that kind of singular genius others overlook is the one instinct I hope history proves McVay has as a special talent.
