Albert Breer Empties His Rams Notebook From Training Camp Stop (1 reply)

Albert Breer Empties His Rams Notebook From Training Camp Stop

Myles Garrett has been better than advertised. Plus, Aaron Donald’s plan, Matthew Stafford’s health and the special teams moves that are already paying off.

Albert Breer

LOS ANGELES — The beautiful campus of Loyola Marymount is the fifth stop on my NFL training camp trip, with a powerhouse Rams team bunking up here for a couple weeks. Here’s what I’m hearing …

• The buzz about the new guys is very real. Myles Garrett has been, believe it or not, better than advertised, has fit in seamlessly and should benefit from having a deep, loaded group of defensive linemen around him. And Trent McDuffie has checked every box, as a guy who can play field, boundary and slot corner, and is a tough, physical tone-setter—I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a captain in his first year as a Ram. The team believes he can become perhaps the NFL’s best defensive back in a role not unlike the one that Jalen Ramsey (who, admittedly, is a bigger, more physically imposing player) played in Los Angeles. Those two guys alone should make a very significant difference, and that’s with all due respect to Jared Verse, who was part of the cost of getting Garrett.

• So the next question, obviously, is whether Aaron Donald is going to be part of that defense. Donald’s working through training to make sure he can feel like himself out there—and the bar for him to feel like himself is, obviously, very high. But he and Sean McVay have a very close relationship, and they have established a rough timeline for his return should Donald go through with it. My sense is it wouldn’t happen until after the Rams leave Loyola Marymount and head back to their home facility north of L.A. The plan from there, should he return, would likely mirror how they ramped Donald up in his two holdout years, 2017 and ’18, which happened to be McVay’s first two years with the Rams. And the aforementioned depth and the balance on the defensive front would help them manage Donald, too. Speaking of that depth, there are a couple more young guys—Josaiah Stewart and Braden Fiske—having the kinds of offseasons that give you the idea that they could take their level of play to another level.

• On offense, Davante Adams, Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams are where you’d expect them to be, and Colby Parkinson is leading a deep, versatile tight end group. The second layer of skill talent is where the offense could look a little different than it did a year ago. Terrance Ferguson has had a fantastic offseason. He is now proving to be a guy who can play all over the formation and looks like he could be a force after the catch, showing why the Rams coveted him in the 2025 draft and now believe he could grow into one of the NFL’s best tight ends. Blake Corum has also worked to earn carries alongside Williams, seeing the game faster, and looking like a guy who could add a big-play element to the Rams’ physical run game. If there’s a question on offense, it’s at tackle, where Alaric Jackson is facing potential discipline from the NFL, and Rob Havenstein retired.

• Stafford’s presence certainly has been felt—last year, he had perhaps his best season as a pro at 37 years old, and he has been sharp and locked in early this summer. He’s also as healthy as he’s been at this point in the calendar in a few years, and if he stays that way, there’s every reason to believe he’ll be every bit as good in 2026. More than anything, there’s a sense that he’s really enjoying the game, and the team, and was at the very top of his game the last time we saw him, through the Rams’ playoff run.

• Finally, if there’s one area where there could be a significant uptick in performance from 2026, it’s special teams. McVay was able to land the well-regarded Bubba Ventrone as a new coordinator, and added a couple of real leaders in special teams ace Grant Stuard from Detroit and long snapper Joe Cardona from Miami. The moves underscore how complete a roster it looks like the Rams will take with them to Australia for Week 1.

There won't be another Matthew Stafford. (3 replies)

Just as there will not be another Tom Brady, Stafford can't be replicated either.
Those guys are generational players with unique gifts.

I say this because they are not replaceable with like for like no matter how well we draft. When Stafford leaves the game, no matter who we get (even if it was Joe Burrow... not much chance) it will not be a player to that level. So, I plan on enjoying him as long as he wants to be a Ram, and I know McVay and Snead are not just saying nice things when they tell us that Matthew can play for the Rams as long as he likes!! His arm is still 2nd to none at 38 years old. His mind is unmatched. So, the best we can do is groom a guy with some of the attributes McVay values the most and go from there.

I suspect this year is going to be the Niners swan song for a while (1 reply)

The Niners have gotten old. And they are already dealing with injuries. And the young guys haven't worked out well enough to make up for the aging and then the loss of all those high draft picks to get Lance. It has really hurt them to lose 3 first round picks for Lance, either to trade or to draft guys.

Having to bring back Samuel. Having to rely on the now 30 year old McCaffery (who is always hurt). Even bringing in Mike Evans who, while still good, is not the player he once was. The disaster of really their best most dangerous WR Aiyuk who'll never play for them again. I think this year is going to be the best we'll see of them for awhile. They're going to need to reload, and even if they draft well, it'll take some time to develop those guys.

IMO 2026 will be their best effort of an "all in" year until probably '29 or '30. Shanahan will make the most of what he has (he's a really good coach). But their roster is a step below the Rams and Seahawks for 1st teamers, and then falls off badly for depth.

Then today...

I've had a few of those scans where they insert you in that scanning tube and it never really bothered me. Mostly I slept. Didn't think much about it.... closed my eyes to nap before they even slid me in but then.... when I was in I briefly opened my eyes. Yikes. Top of the tube couldn't have been more than 5 inches above my face.... I did NOT like that. BUT... I did not panic.

I did, however, start to wonder if I was going to panic.
Camp report from VeteranRamFan… (2 replies)

Here’s VeteranRamFan…

This is really pretty cool, all these camp reports! @bubbaramfan , @NYRamsFan (yes wish we could have met!) and @So Ram in another thread about TC. BTW, So Ram found us and bought us each a beer! It was really nice meeting him and no, he doesn't talk like he writes!

I'm not going to rehash what has already been said by some very observant members. I was basically a spotter for bubba, calling out the names of the players involved with what ever play.

DE Garrett - fast doesn't do him justice. He also bends like Gumby. Would of had a couple of sacks if this was game time. He did a windmill move on Quessenberry that left Q looking around at what just happened.

LT Quessenberry - Did pretty well against Garrett most of the day. I was impressed. He did get away with a blatant holding non call.

RT Henderson - 6'8" and 320 pounds. Biggest man on the field, working with the second team. I was intrigued by his size and watched him more than any other player (plus he was right in front of us). Wish I knew his arm length as that is his main strength. His feet are slow, doesn't slide over well and was consistently beat by rushing linebackers however, his arms and strength he was able to just push the rusher away from the pocket. If he can improve his technique...

WR Daniels - Had to get down low on a comeback route but still made the catch. Bennett was throwing. The hype for this kid is real. Great hands and very clean, crisp routs.

TE Ferguson - Seems to have a connection with Ty Simpson. He was catching out routs with ease.

TE Klare - got in with the 2's but I can't recall seeing him involved. He was lined up on the left side so I'm sure I lost sight of him amongst all the bodies.

P Evans - Consistently kicking punts 50-70 yards, depending on where he was kicking. He did have a bad shank off to his right once. Sideline people were covering their heads like someone just yelled "FOUR!".

K Mavis - What a leg! He gets the ball up fast and when I say up, I mean up and out of reach of any defenders leaping to block it. Did I mention the distance? I think many of his kicks would have been good from 60 yards!

QB All - Stafford is what you would expect. Nice seeing him this year after taking last TC off. Bennett is looking better even though he did through some far too short. He is firmly set as QB #2. Simpson I like. very good accuracy and velocity, getting rid of the ball quickly (I think I'm saying a quick release, not a quick read). He did have to scramble a couple of times and he can run well. One play I feel his was holding the ball to long and yelled out get rid of it. He stepped up in the pocket and avoided a sack...was this pocket awareness or just luck?

Everyone else not mentioned above either did nothing exceptional or did there job correctly, as would be expected.

Our next camp we'll be attending is next Tuesday, August 3. So until then, take care!

Camp report from NY Rams Fan… (no replies)

Here’s NYRams Fan…

Bubba, great write up! Looks like I was seated just a few rows ahead of you, if I knew you were up there I would have come to say hello.

Some other thoughts from me:
First kick return rep of the day looked like it could have gone for 50+ yard return, if not all the way, but coverage cleaned up after that
During the 2s 11 on 11, our new LB Stuard got into a shoving match with a RB and had to be separated
BY0 was out there today. He was rotating in and out. He had some nice coverage on one play but an even better pass from Stafford to Parkinson resulted in a 15 yard completion along the sideline
You can feel when Garrett goes into another gear. It got competitive towards the end of practice as they were determine which of O vs D won the day, and Garrett was in the backfield in a flash. D won that play but O won the next two and came out victorious.
Cannot be understated that Mevis looked solid on FGs. Every kick was clean, had distance and looked pretty centered from my vantage point
We need Alaric available or someone from the outside who can step in. Quessenbury looked fine to be a backup but he was overmatched and it sometimes affected Staffords ability to throw. To be fair he was lined up across from 95 most of the day.
During redzone period, Stafford got pressured and forced the ball out towards Adams running across the back line. Curl was standing right there and dropped an easy pick
Stetson Bennett didn’t look good. Lots of passes in the ground, away from receivers frame, etc. In the early portion when they were doing drills on air he completely missed the receiver on two consecutive 10ish yard passes
You can see the talent with Ty but there’s lots of room to improve and become more consistent. He had some nice zip on the ball and had a couple of pretty rollouts against air. There were also a few that came out flat and would have been picked if there was someone in coverage.

Camp report from bubbaramfan… (21 replies)

Here’s bubbaramfan…

Here we are for our 11th TC. VRF and I got here a little later than we wanted. Lots of traffic but we got good seats on the top row at the 50yd line. about 80 degrees and sunny. Mavis was the first one out followed by Evans. They both practiced their kicking. Evans getting 50+ yds on his punts. Mavis drilling 50+ through the upright
The rest of the team came out and the did their stretching and jogging back and forth for ten minutes then separated int position groups. OL to the far left endzone, LB's and TE's in the middle of the field, RB's far side WR's and QB's right endzone, all doing warmups. Defense behind us on the baseball field out of our view.

Special team drills. Mavis doing kickoffs, to Whittington first, then Smith, Corum, Rivers, Waters all took turns fielding kicks. Smith still looks the best. They spent some time lining OL vs DL and snapping FG try's, Evans was holder and muffed a snap. They spend more time than previous camps working on ST. (I wonder why, lol)

QB's practiced short passes to WRs, then hand offs to RBs, and short passes to TE's. D was off doing their thing on the other side of the field.

Finally we get to 11 on 11. 1st team O vs 1st team D. I couldn't see very well their #'s some had their shirts rolled up or too much long hair to see their #'s. OL was LT Quisenberry LG Avila, C Shelton, RG Dotson, RT McClendon. Stafford QB, Williams, Corun RB, Adams, Nacua, Whittington and Mumfeld WR, Higbee, Parkinson, Allen TE.
D was Garrett, Fiske. Ford, Turner Stewart (Young wasn't suited). Landman, Spights ILB, Lake Curl, McDuffie, Forbes, Watson Backfield.
I'm not going to do a play by play, just some highlights of some of the better plays. We have to remember they are in shells and holding back on contact. Mostly short quck passes to start out, Higbee, and Parkinson both made good catches. Adams a sideline catch. Only one deep pass from Stafford, everything short or mid. Stafford got a lot of snaps today and looked pretty good.

After a series 2nd team comes on. They alternated like this for several series.

2nd team O Troast at LT, Blaske RG, Limmer C, Bowls RG, Henderson RT. This is how they started, but they kept rotating guys around the 2nd team. Limmer also got a lot of snaps with the 1st team later and Troast also took snaps with the 2nd team at RG. Bennett at QB Rivers and Hunter as RB, Ferguson, Redman Klare TE, Daniels, Scott, Presley, Mario Williams all took snaps. Simpson did get snaps with the 2nd team later on. 2nd team Dl and backfield kept switching and just about everyone not a starter got to play.

They practiced 2 min drills alternating 1st and 2nd team. Then did some field goal work, Mavis hitting all his tries.

All and all a good practice played with a lot of intensity. NO INJURIES! More 11 on 11 than previous camps. More special team work. Stafford, Adams, Nacua, Williams and Corum look ready for season already. Whittington looked better. Daniels caught every ball thrown at him. Garrett is a beast and made Qusinberry look silly at times.

When I reflect more this evening and remember what I missed here I'll post again. VetRamFan and SoRam will probably chime in with their take on todays practice.

Next TC for us will be the 3rd. Hopefully they'll be in full pads so we can really get an idea of where these guys are at. A lot of good play from rookies and UDFA's, lets see who stands out when the pads go on.

Shout out to SoRam for buying us a beer. You rock dude!

Not just for young receivers who hope to master his separation-creating superpower. Adams has also become a trusted mentor for defensive backs. One such DB is cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

Wait, how can Adams possibly mentor a cornerback? Well, the wily veteran has been coaching up younger players from the moment of his arrival, and he is picking right up where he left off in 2026. That's quite beneficial for both the Rams and for Forbes, who is playing in the last season of his rookie contract.

Forbes has flashed the potential of an above-average starting corner, but his thin frame at 6-foot tall and a svelte 173 pounds limits his endurance and makes him vulnerable to physical receivers. Adams is putting him to the test in training camp.

Forbes is already benefiting under Adams' tutelage

While Forbes has promising coverage skills, he falls apart after the reception. Despite boasting a sub-60 percent completion rate when targeted, he flails with a career missed tackle percentage of over 20 percent. For the Horns, his missed tackle rate has jumped to nearly 22 percent.

To get better, Forbes must lock down opposing receivers to prevent completions in the first place, bulk up in the weight room to make better tackles, or both.

So far in training camp Forbes has been matched up with Adams, and the duo is splitting those contests evenly. Even when Adams does make the catch, Forbes has made the immediate tackle.

Adams is giving Forbes hard lessons on the practice field on how to cover an uncoverable receiver. And Forbes is responding to the challenge. That is something fans and coaches hope to see much more of when the season finally starts.

Forbes will never be the guy who outmuscles receivers. He may not even be the guy who outhustles his teammates. But he does have a knack for breaking up passes, sometimes with circus-worthy acrobatics. Last season Forbes recorded a career-best 18 passes defensed, tied for third in the NFL.

Lucky for him, Adams is more than a receiver; he is a part-time coach for his teammates. And right now, Forbes is getting the full benefit of his instruction.

As always, thanks for reading.

Balancing my personal biases, I'm going to trust Puka (for now). (15 replies)

For me and, I suspect, many Rams fans, being a supporter of Puka Nacua over the past several months has been challenging.

As a player, he's one of my favorites. I love the way he approaches the game with fire, passion and joy. As a 5th round pick who became an All-Pro, he's the type of Cinderella story that we, as sports fans, love.

Then came the off-field stuff. Puka not only disappointed me as a fan, but as a person, as some of his well-publicized expressions are of the type that I find personally offensive.

The team has handled the situation well, publicly condemning inappropriate behavior, while providing a path to contrition and improvement.

Yesterday, I listened to Puka tell the press how he appreciates the team's support, and how he's learning - with the help of some "tough love" from his mother and brothers - how to better conduct himself as an adult and a professional.

And so, I have to make a decision. Which bias do I lean into? My bias as a Rams fan and a fan of Puka Nacua the player, or my personal biases activated by his actions?

My choice... I'm going to trust that he can become someone who I can admire on and off the field. I want to be a Puka fan, so I choose to be.

I hope he doesn't let me down.
