McVay's comments on Man vs Zone coverage (5 replies)

Found this on Reddit and thought it was interesting. Will we see more "man" this week???

link

r/LosAngelesRams
•
5h ago
OkEmphasis5923
McVay's comments on Man vs Zone coverage

In JB's most recent The Coach McVay Show episode, he asked McVay about the disconnect between the offseason moves and the zone coverage we were seeing (starts at 15:30). Net net it's a lot of PR coachspeak but if you read between the lines he's acknowledging that Shula was outschemed and they can do a better job at utilizing man coverage. Here's a transcript of his response:

"There was some opportunities that we did you know really with the exception of the one explosive, you know the Niners are an excellent offense, I think really what ended up happening a lot of screens early on. There was a lot of you know a good commitment to the run where they were able to be in short you know shorter third down situations. Outside of the one big play that we did give up, I thought we were pretty connected on the back end. And that’s a learning opportunity [referring to DRob’s TD] for us where we can really play that specific coverage a lot better and we know that. But there was some opportunities that we did get sticker than people probably realize because of the way that we align. And then you know, and then there’s some opportunities for us to look inward without getting too granular, you know, or revealing anything in terms of our approach moving forward that we’re optimistic that we can do some things collectively. And I have tremendous trust and confidence in Chris Shula leading the way, our defensive coaches, and then ultimately you know we’re always looking at where those opportunities to put the players in the positions that allow their best traits and characteristics to come to life on a consistent basis and you’ll see that moving forward."

They don't have much of an identity. When you look at our past defenses - you had guys like Donald and Jalen Ramsey. Vocal veteran guys who backed up the talk with outstanding play. Model the way so to speak. Who was that on our defense last year. I know Lake is a captain and respected, but he's not a swagger guy. On offense you have Stafford and Adams, and before that Kupp. Someone the other players could turn to when things were going south. Guys with the resume and the swagger. Maybe McDuffy can be that guy. Don't know much about him

I was hoping Garrett could bring that and maybe he still will, but not being part of camp and not being game healthy really crushed all that. Even if Donald plays limited snaps and is only 85% of what he was - the intangibles could really help us bring this defense together.

Kind of like there is no PI if the ball is tipped.

It is such a cheap and easy play right now for WRs to see that they have no chance to catch a pass, to turn back toward the LOS and initiate contact, but because the rule says that if they are facing the ball and the DB isn't, it's PI.

In the meantime, I want the Rams receivers to start doing this, especially downfield and on important downs.

Should be night and day difference this week.

McVay will never give up his playcalling duties. He just doesn’t have it in him. So be prepared for a continuation of good, bad, and occasionally ugly play calls this season.

Surely Rams will re-emphasize the 13 personnel this week? With a dose of targets to the players from time to time?

Hoping to see Ferguson unleashed as a receiving weapon this week.

Perhaps McVay will rely more heavily on his powerful running game vs the Giants. Would be a very smart decision, imo.

I believe that we’re finally gonna see Stafford snap back this week and make us proud.

Looking forward to seeing Bailey given some quality snaps.

I think it’s better than 50-50 that AD finally plays a few snaps this week.

Shula must turn loose his man CB’s this week, or is it a question of whether McVay will allow it? Greatly reduce the soft zone crap and blitz if necessary to get pressure.

I think that we’re finally gonna see that rested and powerful Rams offense and defense this week, and not a moment too soon.

Drew Kendall and Willie Lampkin are the top backup options on the interior of the line and Mannion expressed belief in any direction the Eagles might take.

“We feel really confident with all of our guys,” Mannion said, via a transcript from the team. “It’s unfortunate with Landon, the guy’s a warrior, and we’ve got to get him healthy. In the meantime, we need guys to step up, but Drew’s had a really nice camp. Willie’s had a nice camp. Really, we have a lot of guys on our offensive line with a lot of position flexibility, versatility. We feel good about all of them. Obviously, Landon will be missed in the meantime, but we feel confident that guys are going to be able to step up and fill the void.”

Kendall played center in college and Lampkin has also worked there, which accounts for the versatility that Mannion talked about as an asset. He was asked if moving center Cam Jurgens to guard is on the table.

“We’re going to keep that in-house in terms of what our plan is for this week, just for competitive reasons,” Mannion said. “Like I said, we have a lot of guys up front that can play multiple spots. We’ve been training them at all spots, so gives us some flexibility there.”

Dickerson said Monday that he was “a complete liability” in Sunday’s win over the Commanders and the line was inconsistent as a whole in the opener. Dickerson’s health likely factored into that and the Eagles could wind up sounder if they pick the right alignment for the Titans.

The Rams’ Super Bowl odds dropped to +650 from their preseason odds of +500, but they’re still the favorites to win it all.

The 49ers, however, are now the favorites to win the NFC West. The 49ers’ odds are +160 to win the division, followed by the Seahawks at +175 and Rams at +205. The Cardinals are extreme long shots at +4500.

The 49ers’ odds to win the Super Bowl are +1400, tied with the Chiefs for the fifth-best chance of winning the title.

Why would the Rams be first in Super Bowl odds but third in division odds? It’s ultimately about how good the oddsmakers think the Rams will be by the time the postseason rolls around. Right now, with Myles Garrett on injured reserve and Aaron Donald yet to play, it’s easy to see the Rams starting slow and falling behind in the division. But if they make the playoffs at all, the Rams should be a tough team to beat.

The Rams may have to go on the road in the playoffs, but no one should dismiss their chances of winning it all.

Not blowing leads, not sleep-walking for 1/2 the game.

I can't think of one last season. Maybe the blowout against the 49ers when 2/3 of their team was injured?

The Jaguars before the Jags found themselves?

The pickings are slim at best.

Some Nate Atkins (10 replies)

Nate Atkins@NateAtkins_

[x.com]

The Rams blitzed on 11.1% of drop-backs against the 49ers, tied for 2nd fewest in the NFL in Week 1 per @TruMediaSports
.
They got pressure on just 22.2% of pass plays (3rd-worst).

Curious how they adjust with no Myles Garrett, the engine to the 4-man approach.

Aaron Donald?

By contrast, the Rams had the highest pressure rate in the NFL last season when rushing just 4, per
@NextGenStats
.
But a banged up Myles Garrett in place of Jared Verse + Kyle Shanahan’s scheme made it a lot harder for that model to work.

------------------

Myles Garrett’s knee was a situation they’ve managed for weeks since the initial injury. Sean McVay said they hoped he could play through it and learned in the game that he wasn’t nearly himself.

They did not consider leaving him in L.A. like they did with Aaron Donald.

-----------------------

They’ve played one game and still have a really loaded roster. It’s all still in their grasp, as much as it was before the season.

But some adversity is hitting early this time.

Rams in 4-2-5 until big runs starting 3rd Q, moved to base 3-4 with a nose, and a 3/4i tech. In first half mostly two DTs, no nose.

You can go after Shula, fine....but don't say he didnt "adjust' you can criticize Shula, but be accurate

My oldest daughter's family roots for the Chargers. My youngest daughter's family roots for the Bronco's. We all root for each other's teams.

NONE of those teams won on opening weekend. And not just that... all 3 of them looked like @$#@. It was the worst for me.... because IMHO the Ram's debut was the worst... Chargers at least looked like an NFL Team... Bronco's not so much. :laughing.

Friday Night Lights CAME THRU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Moose's Kerman Lions went 4-0 beating one of their chief rivals 14-0.

Couple Plays... first one the opening kickoff. I like this one because I've always said there is Track Speed and there is Football Speed. They can differ. Moose, in Red and #18 is nearest the camera.. he chases down and stops a TD on the kickoff by catching one of the fastest kids in the valley in the 100. Second play: Nope, Moose didn't get credited a 'sack'... Intentional Grounding!
