Home and in my bed..... Well, what I'd like to tell you is that I'm one tough man and went thru the surgery with little to no problems. But that would be a lie. That was the toughest thing I've ever gone through. The misery of it brought me to my knees. At times I was a simpering weenie who needed help to do anything. I HATE admitting that. I lost count of how many tubes were attached to me. BUT.... I can say this: Average recovery time to be able to leave the hospital is 12 days.... I did it in 7. It was actually two major surgeries....my jaw and my leg. Get this... they took a piece of the small bone in my leg and reconstructed my jaw... it turned out GREAT.... and you know what they replaced the gone in my leg with? NOTHING. They said it's non-load bearing and I will. be able hike again. Amazing To be honest I was hoping to be at least a little 'bionic'. :laughing. This battle is not over. Now I have radiation coming up... but for now I'm doing GREAT. The Doctors worked a miracle..... there will be some permanent numbness but as far as scarring/disfigurement there will be very little. I'll add a photo from earlier today. (lots a facial swelling) I didn't lose much weight, oddly. Well, I did, but I was so overweight that after losing about 35lbs I'm still fat. :laughing My diet for the next two weeks is horrific...almost no fat. I love fat. :laughing Ok, I know I'm boring the hell out of you guys so I'll stop now. Just wanted to say I'm home, doing good, and my spirits are still up. Thanks to you all for your concern and GO RAMS!!!!!!!!! Taken on the drive home from SF a couple of hours ago at San Luis Reservoir. We stopped so I could view a herd of Elk. Whats my point? Oh yeah - the food.. I didn't eat, at all the first night and first day.. Second day I had bacon, but somehow in my chart it said "heart healthy diet ONLY" so it was turkey bacon and tasted like shoe leather.. Was awful.. I didn't eat the rest of the day, next day I figured, "how can you mess up a pancake?" so, I had a pancake.. a "heart healthy" pancake.. Seriously, it was cardboard with some sort of sugar free syrup.. I had one bite.. it was embarrassing because I knew the girl serving the the food.. it was truly awful.. I tried REALLY hard to eat it to make the girl feel better and because, if you order a $12 pancake that had about a 3" diameter, you really should eat that thing.. Couldn't do it.. Couldn't force it down.. If it would have been bigger, they could have made a case that it was the UFO that crashed in Roswell in the 40's.. It was definitely tough enough to survive re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere..

I didn't even drink that many protein shakes, honestly.

I think my mom may have bought me a pack of those premixed protein drinks, but I honestly don't remember drinking any of them.

I toughed it out with milkshakes, ice cream, jello, and scrambled eggs.

If you've seen what a blended meal looks like, choosing a protein drink ain't hard.

My granddad lived to be 99, but I think he wore dentures for about 35 years. Even as an old geezer, he cooked for himself and my grandmother cooked for herself. Poppy used to fry up a steak or a pork chop in butter and other seasonings and it smelled so, so good. Then he'd cut the meat up in like 1-in pieces and then run it all through a meat grinder. It looked like dog food after that. Delicious meat but pulverized! He'd always have a small pot of rice or mashed potatoes to go with it. Then he'd heat up some kind of vegetable like peas, and when they were done, he'd mash them to heck with a fork. He'd put all the food on his plate and just mix it all together with his fork until it was unrecognizable. It just looked like mushy dog food. Now, the reason my granddad prepared his food this way is because he didn't like eating with his dentures. They bothered him. It’s ironic how many germs and bugs are floating around in a hospital.

About the food: I remember when I broke my jaw in 8th grade I got a recipe from the nurse for meatloaf in a blender.

I looked at her and said, “Soooo….it’s just regular meatloaf except it’s finished in the blender?”

Needless to say, I stayed with ice cream and jello.

But Jello isn't the worst... it's those protein shakes. I can't tolerate them. And they force feed them to you. One of the 'dangerous' possibilities in recovery (for my kind of surgery), is nausea... so they ask that question dozens of times a day. Well... I'm NOT nauseous except when force fed a protein shake. :laughing.
