I do know that Safari, DuckDuckGo, Brave and Tor all have built-in protection for Macs.... I would assume their Windows versions are also safe(r)?

I'm not crazy about Mcafee or Norton... I had Mcafee until early April, frankly there were probably more popups from Mcafee for added services than if I had been infected by malware.

Like 21Dog, I have the paid version of Malwarebytes and happy with that. I uninstalled Mcafee and enabled Microsoft Defender as kind of a backup. I couldn't really get a clear answer (that satisfied me at least) whether Malwarebytes was sufficient by itself, but online reading convinced me that those two and general caution are probably good enough. My brother swears by Bit Defender and has an extra license he was going to give me, but it wouldn't play nice with Malwarebytes and I wasn't going to give that one up. When I got my current one the one it was replacing had a I7, the salesman talked me into I5, but I really wasn't wanting that, I didn't want to go down.
But the salesman told me "Oh I can sell you a I7 but I'm just trying to save you money on something you don't need" I've since regretted that. I'll be going I7 or above.
