UUUUUUUUGH!!! Removing Popcorn ceilings is DUST HELL!!

Just one third of the house done today and it's a MESS!! On top of that, we had to shift boxes twice. Gonna have to shift some more tomorrow. THEN, when they start the flooring in a week or two. Gonna have to shift ALLLLL of the boxes all over again. Me and my Wife are gonna be EXHAUSTED in the next 2-3 months. Once all the construction and Kitchen is done, THEN we get to pressure wash the house and then paint the house inside and out (At least the ceilings will be done)

My goal is to have everything done by early / mid November.

YEARS ago, I recall my Dad painting my Great Grandmother's house with lead paint.

On the side of the house, because of the close proximity of the fence, when he was near the top of the ladder, he was forced to be pretty close to the outside wall. It was a hot day with no breeze. He was breathing that stuff in for a few hours. When he came home, his face was splotchy and he said it felt like a thousand tiny needles @#$%& him all over. Then his breathing got a tad labored. I was maybe 6 at the time so I didn't know. But many years later, I remember Dad saying he REALLY REALLY should have gone to the Hospital. He said that was the last time he used lead paint. That stuff was nasty.

We had a similar issue with paint...

we're repainting our church and again I can't remember the date but lead in paint was banned long ago so if you last painted after that date you're good to go. If not... it's hell. You have to call in a special team to clean it and the cost is like 3 times more than the new paint job. We were quoted $13,000 for the paint job and $35,000 for clean up if it had lead. We didn't have lead. - JamesJM

I have seen the asbestos crap. Looks like fibers and mud. I hosed out our garage this afternoon and it dissolves into nothing. Also, I wanna say it was 1979 or 80, when asbestos was banned from Construction in Florida. Our house was built in 1983.

That dust you referred to above is really bad stuff and you need to be careful because popcorn ceilings carry asbestosis and that can cause cancer ( mesothelioma).
SOOOO ready for the Popcorn part to be done today. The kid doing it is Polite as can be and works hard. BUT...

I'm going to tell the Contractor that there is NO WAY he should send just ONE guy to do so much work. This guy is prepping, scraping and "cleaning". Because he is doing all three, I do see a bit of sloppiness in Prep and cleaning. He's a bit absent minded. AFTER he swept the garage, I lowered the door only to find popcorn goo on the door track and spring. I said EFF it and just grabbed my garden hose and washed everything. Including the wall panels. It's so hot outside it will dry in 30-40 minutes. Super nice kid and VERY Polite. But he is too inexperienced to be working alone.

Gotta pull eeeeeeverything out of the garage and then pray it does not rain (LOL BIG request for the Big Man this time of year in Florida!)
I'm playing it safe. Got a Contractor to do it all. Too much going on for my knowledge.

Gonna be adding a few electrical outlets. Reshaping our front door entrance that was messed up when built in 1982. As I type. Popcorn is just about halfway done. Monday, things get really rolling around here.....The fireplace will be changed and they will start prepping the ceiling for painting. Then they are replacing all doors in the house and then LVP flooring. When all that is done, the Kitchen is getting a basic remodel. New cabinets and counter. I might wash the house and paint outside between work on doors and floor and kitchen. Wife and I will work together on interior painting, clean up and getting everything in place.

You think scraping popcorn is messy..

You ain't seen ANYTHING til you start sawing stone or brick.. seriously.. be prepared for dust by the buckets to go flying off your masonry blade.. you're cutting the top half off? I highly recommend you dismantle the stone from the top down to about the level you want the mantle.. then saw the bits that are left.. do NOT saw stone at the mantle height and then try to remove working ÿour way up.... it could all come crashing down on you.. I had a friend die that way in high school..

In dismantling, I did what you're doing with bricks.. I chisled the mortar away and pulled out brick by brick, then sawed the vertical brick halves away to make it flush, then built a 90 degree cover to mount over the edges.. it looks great.. like it was part of the house..

Just be extremely careful, please.. and work your way DOWN from the very top.. stop when you're a little bit higher than the mantle height you want, then horizontally cut the stone parts away using a circular saw with a masonary blade that you try to keep wet.. use a level and mark the horizontal line on the stone.. be expecting that line to ger washed away by keeping the blade wet.. also, be expecting the saw blade to kick out every now and then if it hangs up on something.. .. be expecting more dust and debris than you've ever seen before.. it will go FLYING off the blade in large bunches.. and try to keep the blade wet to reduce friction heat on the blade.. because that will tear up the blade.. your blade will get small diameter as you progress.. it's cutting with friction and the blade will wear away.. hopefully one blade gets you through this job..

Holler if you need any other useless info lol...

It's not hard, but you have to do it the right way.. there my be better ways, but this is how I did my brick wall removal.. I just don't want you to get hurt, ok?
