How do I not hate today's music? I mean its more than that... Leif Garrett looks like a damn bad ass general from WW2 compared to whatever the hell I just saw. But OK... So was Abba, the BeeGees, Elton John, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band... are they the equivalent to the pop stars today? I'm just not hip to the music today? My daughter knows all the words to songs that, to me, suck... not just a little bit either. I mean they are horrible to listen to. I want to think I can still recognize good music and that my age doesn't affect that. It also occurred to me that Zeppelin was classic rock when I was growing up. I was born in January 1968... And it seemed like old music.... so did the Beatles. But it was just a decade or so... I was listening to the radio and the DJ (is that what they're called?) said 30 years ago today Soundgarden put out this song... And although I don't feel like Soundgarden is modern... I don't feel like that record was 30 years ago... Uptown Funk was released 2014... My daughter was 4... Stairway to Heaven released late in 1971... I was 3 years 10 months. But she, now 14, feels like Uptown Funk is contemporary... whereas I, at age 14, felt Stairway was pretty old. Anyway, Taylor Swift sucks IMO. Kidding. I kid, I kid... I'm a kidder. My point is that the audience today doesn't have the same background... The music from the 50's developed into the 60's and 60's into 70's and then the 80's... 90's etc. each decade adding a bit of its own flavor. But sometime around the 2000's that started to slow. I am guessing the internet was the culprit. Rock bands started to sound like Creed and Nickleback and then there was whatever Korn or SOAD is... and then things just got blurred to the point that it all sounds the same... and for a lot of the younger listeners it is just what is available to their generation.

My daughter likes, what I would consider some of the worst music I've ever heard... and if she hears the current popular song, she goes nuts...everyone does... But she also likes Queen, the Turtles, the Eurythmics... and knows the lyrics, so I know she has listened to them more than once. So its a stretch but I think the millennials and Gen Z don't have the wealth of music to form their tastes... I think a jingle writer would do really well writing pop songs right now. It has to be catchy or the music has to be attached to a social media celebrity or idol type. But insane talent is not a necessity today and music is a lot more about style and a lot less about substance.

So would Taylor Swift be popular in the 70's? Not to pick on her but she is selling tickets at $1000 a pop, so she's a bit of a target. The biggest music star at the moment... She is basically the Beatles. Simply check out ANY Top 20 list for ANY week through the 70s or 80s and you will see song after song after song that are Classics. MANY variations of sounds and harmonies brought to life by REAL Musical ability. R&B back in the day had Bands like Kool & The Gang who sang harmonies while playing guitars , keyboards and horns.
