Waterfield... English Springer Spaniel question...

Looks like we will be making the move soon. Sheesh, the $$$$$. Ah well. :laughing

Question... do they make good house pets? We understand they need daily exercise, ability to roam a little.... BUT... we don't want to risk an outside dog (traffic and fear she/he would chase cars... almost certainly fatal in my area).... we'd want her/him to live inside the house. I don't like keeping a dog penned up and definitely NOT on a chain.

We've only had outdoors dogs in the past... that did NOT chase cars, but there's still a danger. In the old days I wouldn't have worried about it much because traffic around my home is minimal... that has changed with all the land going into trees. Now workers are constantly up and down the roads.

I have precisely ZERO experience raising an indoor dog, so any suggestions... (from anyone)... very much appreciated.

Well, I have no neighbors... at least near-by...

the closest neighbor I have is ¼ of a mile away.

We were just talking about food for him. Our plan was to take him to the Vet as soon as we can... (yes, he's been to a Vet and is fully ready to come home with us).... we'd take him just to learn about food, (he/she is on puppy food at the moment and will be for ? time) - - and learn anything else we need to know.

The life preserver does make sense, I guess. We often anchor far from shore and there is no way for the dog to get back onboard without a helping hand. Not that we'd forget he was out there. :laughing

One of my plans for exercise was swimming... I have land on a river BUT....not right now. We still have flood water coming down and will have throughout the summer and probably into autumn.

Fixed the AC last weekend and just took her out on a pretty nice drive.. got home and the passenger seat area carpet is SOAKED in water.. Pure water.. probably at LEAST a gallons worth is wha tI've gotten out of it by now..

My only guess is AC condensation, but why its leaking IN the car, I'm not sure.. That would be an awful lot of water under any circumstances, tho.. but it is pure water and there is no pure water anywhere in the car, so gotta be condensation.. I just gotta track it down..

I've never had her on a boat however although she used to be able to swim a quarter of a mile across a lake and back-and then do it again without much rest.

One thing to keep in mind. She should buy only the best food out there for her Springer. They are high energy guys and girls and need good quality food-just don't over feed them-as a lot of people I know do just that. As far as food goes the researchers in this domain have found that the very high end Purina products that focus on the gastroentestinal formula-both canned and kibble are the best for these dogs. But pet stores don't carry them for over the counter sales-you need a prescription-but once you have the prescription you can get the stuff delivered be Amazon regularly. We use "ProPlan Veterinary Diets-EN Gastroenteric" (both kibble and canned)

If she feeds her doggie (not too much again) -keep her in fresh water each day-run her like crazy-she will have a wonderful dog that eveyone, including nighbors will love for a long time. Like I said-Pepper is 12 and hasn't slowed down and looks like she was 4 yrs old. She likely will outlive both Barb and myself-.And I'm not sure I enjoy that thought.

When we travel north to visit our Sacramento family-often- we always go up 101 and stay in or near Morro Bay for a few days both going and coming. The beaches in that area are all dog friendly-meaning you can run your dog as long pick up their poop. We also live in a cul-de-sac of 5 homes and all the neighbors love Pepper enough to where she will-on her own-visit them in their garages and homes. Also its big enough for her to chase after a launched ball to their properties and no one minds-they love her.

Of course I would love to have her on a wide open ranch but she gets a ton of exercise based on the above-and she's 12 yrs old but out swims and runs most other dogs-certainly those her age-and especially on the beaches.

We are blessed.

And even if they did I would have never thought an English Springer Spaniel needed one. I think she's planning on taking him/her out on our pontoon boat this summer... and, not just that... but also to school, the mall, church, Disneyland next year, and every other place we go forever. :laughing

They also came home with enough chew toys to stock a kennel. I tried explaining that even if we had every chew toy in the world laid out on our living room floor their new $200 "brand name" shoes were going to be short-lived. :laughing

Yikes....

Too late... or nearly so. :laughing My daughter is headed down to Bakersfield Friday to pick up our new English Springer Spaniel.

Another question... now I "believe" what you say but how does that work with you? I mean... you live in town, right? Do you mean a backyard satisfies that need? If so.. no problem. My yard is 2.5 acres... not huge, but enough to roam... "under supervision". Not sure it matters but when I said 'house pet' I meant he'll sleep indoors, and come in often, but he/she won't be confined to the house at all times.

As for the puppy we're getting, actually 11 weeks old.... we have two to pick from... a male and a female. Since it's my daughter driving to Bakersfield to make the choice I won't know until she gets home. Names are picked out, by the way.... I'll reveal them after our puppy arrives. :laughing

I'd love to take our new dog to my ranch in Coalinga.... dog heaven with all the smells. BUT... rattlesnakes. Maybe once trained to stay close and not zip off in a frenzy of excitement I'll chance it.

Nice photos, BTW. I don't think there is any breed I consider any more beautiful. Also... I had a cousin that trained hunting dogs and he dealt with only two breeds... Vizsla's and English Spring Spaniels..... this after trying several breeds. He told me the two breeds easiest to train, quick to learn, were the Vizla's and English Springer Spaniel.... even more so than Labs. Not sure I believe that but it's what he told me. I owned a Vizsla, that I got from my cousin, and no question in my mind they train faster than any other breed alive.

So anyway... if were to tell my granddaughter and daughter that I changed my mind because you warned me off.... after I gave them the go ahead.... let's just say you and I would be wise to hire personal body guards. :laughing
