For QBs, size matters.... but other things matters more (2 replies)

As we approach June, and then especially as we get into the real season, we're all going to be reminded of the real traits of NFL QBs that lead to winning in both the regular season and post season. And all those traits starts above the shoulders.

You don't have be 6'3" and above to be a really good NFL QB. Rogers was shorter than that. Caleb Williams is shorter than that (he's the same height as Simpson), and yet I hear no concern about his height.

As Polian said a couple of days ago on the XM NFL show: ALL the guys drafted can make "all the throws". They all have sufficient arm strength. Not canons, but plenty enough. Waner didn't have a strong arm... heck, neither did Peyton Manning. The issue comes down to making the RIGHT throws, at the proper velocity, ball location, and to the right guy at the right time.

Over and over we watch big, mobile, strong armed QBs selected, everyone wowed by their athleticism, size, howizter arm, and either not succeed to a suffiicent level to consistently win, or they simply go down in flames (Lance, Richardson types) because they don't or can't do what Polian says.

What a QB sees, how fast he can process it, how well he can innovate when a play breaks down, his demeanor and leadership, his work ethic, toughness (physical and mental) and ACCURACY are the real keys. Then of course his judgment and staying healthy.

Yes, size matters to a degree. Arm strength (like Stafford) can be a big differentiator IF all the previouisly mentioned critical traits are also met.

The point being that all these reasons that some just don't like Simpson, are the ones that ought to count the least. The ones that count the most, Snead, McVay and several former NFL QBs and GMs say he has in spades.

Is that a guarantee of anything? No. But it is a greater indicator of future success than height, weight, and athleticism. And, BTW, just look at his tape. He certainly isn't a blazer, but this young man IS athletic, IS mobile, and can and will make plays with his legs and is one of those who keeps his eyes downfield when he is scrambling.

And yet, the NFL pickers stil get sucked in by the wrong things.

And just to be clear: I was surprised by the pick. But, this young man has everything needed to develop into a fine NFL starting QB. And, barring the unforseeable, he's going to have the chance to develop and mature like few other drafted 1st rounder QBs ever get. Great HC. Great offensive minds to develop him. Great QB ahead of him so no pressure to play. Great organization. Surrounded by Superbowl level players and play makers.

I just can't find a reason to be down on this young man or the Rams selection of him. If he was tagged to have to play day one, that's a different matter.

But never attempting to do so is an automatic failure. That's why Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead deserves the benefit of the doubt when drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. LA needs a young quarterback now, if for no other reason to have on on the roster in 2027.

But San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch had an open smirk when asked about Los Angeles selecting Simpson. He tried to recover, but the damage was done. He openly scoffed at the selection.

But before 49ers fans howl, hoot, and holler over who was drafted in LA to rally behind John Lynch, let's check Lynch's success at drafting rookies at any position. To sum it up, he has angered and frustrated even his own beat writers. And deservedly so.

How can John Lynch forget his own QB drafting dissater?

We noticed that the San Francisco 49ers' own 2026 NFL Draft class has been given the cold shoulder as well. So even as John Lynch tosses shade at the LA Rams, he opens himself up for all sorts of criticism. Was he so blinded by Les Snead's strategy that he forgot to upgrade his own team's roster?

And then there is the case of drafting a quarterback, as we covered in a previous article:

"Round 1 QB Trey Lance (2021)- while many draft boards got this one wrong, the 49ers were hit with the double whammy of trading three first-round picks (2021, 2022, 2023) and a 2022 third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for an opportunity to select quarterback Trey Lance. Lance would only compete in San Francisco for two seasons."

After spending three first-round picks and four picks altogether on a rookie quarterback who didn't survive on the roster for more than two seasons. It is hardly an achievement that bestows any high ground. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Lynch has made some smart moves in the past. But when it comes to drafting a rookie quarterback, he is the last guy to pull that trigger.

Ty Simpson may work out, or he may not. But it didn't cost three first- round picks to find out. As always, thanks for reading.

He divulges that this year alone, they did 66 private (generally secrative) and extensive visits with players they are interest in, by sending scouts and sometimes Snead or Sean to these players colleges or even homes!

And, the Simpson thing was made very hush-hush with Simpson also asked to keep it secret.

Not from a talking head, but directly from Snead's mouth.
Some questions about the roster/veterans currently on my mind... (no replies)

As I look at the roster/depth chart, here are some questions on my mind...

Can Jarquez Hunter find a role this year?
If Kyren Williams and Blake Corum stay healthy, Hunter probably won't get many snaps on offense. Can he provide value as a kickoff returner? He certainly has the speed to be a threat. He'll need to show that he has more overall special teams value than Ronnie Rivers if he wants to be active on Sundays.

Who will be the odd man out at TE?
Part of me wonders if, despite being resigned, Tyler Higbee's roster spot is not entirely secure. If not Higbee, Davis Allen seems like a guy who could end up on the practice squad.

Is Ty Hamilton's roster spot in jeopardy?
If Tim Keenan becomes the backup NT, I don't see much of a role for Hamilton. He'd be behind Poona Ford, Braden Fiske, Kobie Turner, Tyler Davis and Keenan on the DL, and would have to beat out Larrell Murchison (and possibly others) for a roster spot. Could be a one and done for him as a second year veteran.

Does Omar Speights have any competition?
Shaun Dolac seems like the only competition right now. Still, this is a position where players (like Speights himself, going back to London Fletcher) can come from unexpected places.

Will Emmanuel Forbes shine with less on his shouders?
He seems to be the incumbent dime CB. Will that reduced level of pressure and responsibility allow him to excel? He had some good moments last year, but clearly is not able to matchup with top WRs every down.

Who will return kicks?
On kickoffs, Jordan Whittington and Ronnie Rivers have experience. In addition to Hunter, are there any other candidates? And at PR, who will be Xavier Smith's competition? Hard to believe they would just hand the job to him after a mediocre season and a disastrous muff in the NFCCG.

After they drafted Simpson...

I think there is still a scenario where he comes back. McVay said Simpson would be battling Stetson for the backup position.

They may be battling for 3rd string and it wouldn't cost us much to cut Bennett.

I think Jimmy is looking for a chance to start or else he wants to retire, but if that's the case, The chance of him getting some playing time is only going up as Stafford gets older so the same logic that got him to come over is the same logic why he should sign one more year.

Probably not likely but I'm hopeful.

He always has a significant say over the first pick they make, after dialogue with and ultimate agreement from general manager Les Snead. McVay may get impatient during the process, and so may Snead — but neither unilaterally makes picks. Both coach and GM would have had to be completely on board for this to happen.

Full Article-[www.nytimes.com]

We were so close to winning a Super Bowl last year, let's take a Makai Lemon, a Kenyon Sadiq, a Ruben Bain, or whoever to push us over the top.
2. We won't be picking early in the next few drafts so let's grab our franchise quarterback now. As one ESPN sportscaster was saying just ask the Pittsburgh Steelers what it's like to replace your franchise QB.

So when the posters on this forum complain they made the wrong choice or posters say this was the correct choice, both have a valid argument. Let's hope Ty Simpson turns out to be the real deal not only to help us win a Super Bowl but Arizona was planning on moving up to grab him.

Ty Simpson: drop off an injuries. (17 replies)

I just thought this was interesting:

Ty Simpson was the Heisman favorite by week 6 of the college football season. Going into the 8th week of the season, Simpson was completing 73 percent of his passes and had only thrown 1 interception. Against South Carolina, he suffered a back injury that lingered throughout the entire rest of the season. He completed 61 percent of his passes from that game on. A look at his injuries throughout the year:

-Injured back vs South Carolina
-Developed gastritis from the anti-inflammatory medication he was using to manage the back pain. He lost 15 pounds due to this.
-Developed elbow bursitis in his throwing arm during the SEC championship against UGA.
-Broke his rib after taking a helmet to his ribcage.

That's a heck of a lot of things to deal with in one year. Not just the pain, but the exhaustion of losing 15 pounds due to an illness. That has to say a lot about his toughness and dedication to Alabama's program and his teammates.

So is Ty Simpson the guy who was the Heisman favorite and pff's #1 overall pick up to that point, or is he the guy that we saw down the stretch?

Likely next week. Let’s see if the buzz about the Rams translates to more primetime or national spotlight games

Recall last year somehow someway the Rams games @ Baltimore and Philly were 1pm est time games not the national 4:25 window or primetime. Also games against Seattle were not flexed with one of the game relegated to Amazon prime.

I will say this the NFL has slept on the Rams v Seahawks games for years… looks the scores of those games over the years… those of have been some of the best football games year to year since the Fisher days. It’s crazy… look at the last several years alone. Consistently one score games and OT… with the Rams winning most of those games

I’d like to see Rams v Seattle on 4:25 national window and then on SNF football

My 2 cents on picking Simpson (28 replies)

Stafford played every game last year. The last time he didn’t miss a game was 5 years ago, 2021. And if you recall he played hurt for much of that season.

2025 was a magical year for Stafford. He goes into the season as a big question mark from a health standpoint, with all that cryogenic chamber mumbo jumbo stuff.

So what are the odds that at 38 years old with his long laundry list of medical issues that he does it again? I can tell you this, it ain’t a high probability.

I think it’s quite likely that we will need our backup QB to play at least a game or two in 2026. I sure hope we don’t and Stafford does his magic act again. But I gotta be realistic, and I doubt it.

Then on top of all that, what are the chances that he plays again in 2027? People keep saying Simpson probably won’t play for 2 years. I think that’s a huge stretch.

The odds are high, IMO, that we will need a new starting QB next year.

And if/when that happens, imagine what the Rams would be doing at QB if they passed on Simpson. They’d be in desperate panic mode, hoping they could land a vet they could win with. That’s not how you manage your organization if you’re smart. Just ask the Steelers.

I get the negatives of picking Simpson. But I think the positives outweigh them when you consider the future of the team.
