LOS ANGELES — Breezy, hot, cloudless. The kind of California afternoon that makes you forget the rest of the world exists, which is precisely the point.

The Rams opened their doors to the public for the first time this summer, and what the crowd of 6,000 saw was not a coronation. It was a conversation.

On Day 2 of training camp, with Matthew Stafford taking his first snaps of the summer, the reigning MVP reminded everyone that failure and success are both imposters, and that the real work happens in the tension between them.

Stafford, operating on a modified schedule designed to keep his 38-year-old body peaking for Week 1 rather than wearing down by Halloween, looked every bit the part of a man who threw 46 touchdowns en route to his first MVP award.

He side-armed a throw to Puka Nacua over the middle. He dropped a perfect over-the-shoulder moonshot to Davante Adams down the sideline. He layered a back-shoulder beauty to Konata Mumpfield that only Mumpfield could catch.

Stafford sailed a pass over Tyler Higbee’s head by a foot. He threw into a layered window against three defenders and watched Adams hit the turf after an incompletion.

He felt Myles Garrett’s gravitational pull bending the pocket before Braden Fiske forced him to scramble. The defense, loaded with new talent and old swagger, made the MVP work for every completion.

“There was a lot of really high-quality football,” McVay said, “and we’re not necessarily worried about who’s winning or losing the drill. We want to see good, high-caliber ball. We want to see us be able to reset snap after snap.”

The signature sequence came late in the team period. Stafford found Nacua on a deep post, and the fourth-year receiver plucked it one-handed over Trent McDuffie’s outstretched arm, never breaking stride, taking it to the end zone while the crowd roared and McVay grinned.

Two plays later, same matchup: Nacua sprinting down the sideline, this time, rookie Ty Simpson looking his way, and McDuffie — the league’s highest-paid cornerback — stacked Nacua and knocked the ball to the turf.

Strike. Counter-strike. No victor, only sharpening.

The same dance played out between Adams and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. — a completion across the middle, then a pass breakup on a 50-50 ball.

Cam Lampkin, quiet in reputation but loud in production, intercepted Stetson Bennett for the second consecutive practice, this time reading a scramble-throw across the middle.

Garrett, meanwhile, spent the afternoon living in the backfield, sniffing out a run before it started and collapsing the pocket on a check-down that died in Stafford’s hands before it could live.

The offensive star of the day may have been a rookie who was not invited to the glamour conversation.

CJ Daniels, working with the backups, caught everything thrown his way — a speed-out here, a comeback there, a skinny post between two defenders that he attacked like a veteran. “He’s mature for a rookie,” McVay said. “He comes in with a no-nonsense mentality, but he enjoys football.”

Behind Stafford, the quarterback rotation remains fluid. Bennett took the majority of second-team reps, but McVay refused to “pigeon hole” himself into a fixed hierarchy, mixing in Simpson and praising both for their operation.

Simpson, ever the student, was seen after every series seeking feedback from quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone — a habit that has become his trademark.

Byron Young, nursing a knee and managing his workload with an eye on 17 games plus January, spoke with the calm of a man in a contract year who understands that business is business and brotherhood is something else entirely.

Young admitted the Jared Verse trade “hit pretty hard,” called Verse’s absence the reason the defensive line room is “a lot quieter,” and described watching Garrett’s first step as something that belongs in a different sport.

“He gets about three or four yards on that first step,” Young said. “It’s insane.”

Insane, perhaps. But also necessary.

The Rams are not building for September. They are building for February.

And on a perfect July afternoon, with the stands full of children holding autograph pens and the reigning MVP trading blows with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, McVay’s message from Day 1 echoed: Be courageous.

Courage, in this context, means being willing to look bad in August so you can be unstoppable in January.

It means Adams hitting the dirt on one play and getting up to win on the next.

It means a ball zipping past the outstretched reach of McDuffie, then coming back to win the rep. It means understanding that failure is not the opposite of success. It is the price of admission.

While the Los Angeles Rams made plenty of roster changes this offseason, the key impact area is the secondary. As training camp kicks off fans are eager to learn about new starting cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. But younger defensive backs also stepped up to prove they are still relevant.

Cornerback Cam Lampkin and safety Kam Kinchens joined Watson in raising coaches' eyebrows with great plays in their training camp debuts. And there's plenty more where that came from.

While that's promising start, it's just one moment in the Rams' journey to earning respect on defense. LA finished strong at the end of 2024 and opened 2025 even stronger. But injuries and fatigue set in, and pass coverage stood out as the team's main vulnerability.

Rams fans are eager to see more from the pass defense

LA had taken a multi-pronged strategy to fix what was less-than-satisfactory coverage last season. The first step was to extend both starting safeties, Quentin Lake and Kam Curl.

The second step was transplanting McDuffie and Watson from the Kansas City Chiefs.

The third step was to upgrade the pass rush with none other than Myles Garrett. Presto. This defense just got scary good.

Even if it takes time for all of the pieces to fall into place, the Horns have reason to hope for great improvements right out of the gates. The entire unit has been reconstructed to defensive coordinator Chris Shula's specifications.

So how does he feel about his defense after one day of training camp?

"What I love is the command and the communication," Shula said following Day 1 activities. We want to provide those guys with a lot of clarity so they can go play fast, and that's what it seems like. They got a really good ownership of what they're doing, and (it) seemed like they made some plays today and flew around."

This group understands it has the potential to excel. That potential will only be realized, however, if everyone works hard to develop communication, coordination, and consistency. Day 1 of Rams camp was a great step in the right direction. But this journey is only beginning.

Jake Paul, the NFL player?

The 29-year-old boxer claimed that some teams have already reached out to him about bringing him in.

"I have a couple of teams and coaches that I’ve already talked to that are interested in bringing me onto the team. It’s really going to be quite easy," Paul told Front Office Sports.

Paul said there is a lot of mediocrity in the NFL and believes he is a better athlete than most of the current players.

"I think there is a lot of super mediocrity in the NFL. A lot of not good athletes. Lot of people dropping passes on a consistent basis. I have better hands than them, I’m faster than them, I’m stronger than them, I work harder than them," Paul said.

"Really, all it’s going to take is just me after boxing practicing some routes."

Paul compared the mockery he has received for his NFL aspirations to the reaction he received when he began boxing.

"I mean, it’s pretty simple. Just like when I started boxing, it’s funny to see the tweet-and-deleters out there, the nonbelievers, the naysayers," Paul said.

When asked if he wanted to play for a specific team, the Cleveland native picked his hometown team.

"I mean I’d love to go to the Cleveland Browns, been a Browns fan my whole entire life. My mom is a diehard Browns fan and I think they could use some good receivers over there. No. 17, Browns, reserve the jersey now."

As a boxer, Paul is 12-2 and most recently fought in December 2025. In that fight, Paul was defeated by Anthony Joshua by sixth-round knockout.
