For all the 2026 Draft focus re impact players (no replies)

Is there an equal attention being paid to the picks of the past couple of years and the development and or improvement anticipated from them?

Yes we tend to see later round picks as dept pieces but they are only that until they become starters or mature and or learn their position. The notion that any pick is a sure fire starter or high impact player is based on projection that their college tape will be exactly like their yr 1 pro tape only better coached and utilized but that is a fallacy as well. Absolutely no one saw Puka Nacua as a sure-fire starter let along a potential #1 WR who would break every rookie season record including surpassing highly valued high impact rookies like Justin Jefferson and Jamar Chase. No one saw him making Cooper Kupp expendable and all we were hoping for was a Robert Woods workman like gritty contributor.

Tutu Atwell failed because his skill set and ability did not align with Rams vision or role requirements. Did Tutu improve over the years? Of course but his demand and role were too niche and he could not fill the demand for this team.

I think what we need to highly consider is where we feel our 2024 and 2025 picks and signees are and are projected to be in 2026? What is the expectation and how they could impact the development and usage of our latest roster adds.

We could have drafted projected replacements only to find out that the incumbents are ready for prime time and not yielding to the hype train of any drafted players.

Many would love Rams to add George Pickens as if he is a perfect fit to get this team over the top and I now totally disagree with pursuing a player that commands the salary that he would command knowing he does not even do the things we need a WR to do. If Devante were gone George is a great replacement. If Puka were gone George would be a critical piece that would have to be leveraged differently in our system or we would have to go out a find that complimentary piece but he is not an addin or complementary piece.

This is why our current staff assessment must view the draft and our pick in line with what we have been building around Stafford for half a decade not rebuilding. This is also why the Rams are in the present and also looking towards the future.

If Puka goes down for an extended period of time, can he adequately be replaced? (25 replies)

I`m gonna pull a Les Snead here, but instead of insinuating a rookie draft pick could get injured an not contribute right away, I`m going to say that one of our star players could just as easily get injured.

The way Puka plays, we know its going to be very hard for him to be healthy enough to play 20 games next season. If he misses a few games, it`s not an issue unless its playoff time. However, if its a long period of time or playoff time, then what?

Do the Rams have a player or more than one player that can adequately take his spot in the slot while he is out? I know there are players that McVay could put in the slot, but are they good enough to give the Rams the production they will require to win games? Obviously, no one can totally replace Puka.

This is one of the reasons I really wanted Makai Lemon at #13. I think he would have been a great insurance policy for Puka in case he goes down to injury, but he can also play outside. Like Puka, I believe he is the type of player that can catch 10+ balls and take over a game.

And what about Devante Adams? Getting older with more milage. I like the way McVay was able to get production out of his TE by committee last season, but I still feel the Rams need a good reliable 3rd WR.

Ranking the Rams 2027 UFA Class: From Most to Least Likely to Be Re-signed (2 replies)

Here's how I see us dealing with our starters who will be UFAs after this season. I'm factoring in value, age, likely cost, and difficulty/ease of finding replacements. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

[NOTE: I'm not listing Matthew Stafford, as he is likely to be extended soon, and would clearly be re-signed if he wishes to play.]

Not Going Anywhere

1. Puka Nacua
His off the field issues notwithstanding, I have no doubt that Puka will be re-signed. He's too valuable to let go and, if there was any thought to the contrary, the fact that the Rams did not draft a WR in the two days of the draft tells us everything we need to know.

High Priority

2. Kevin Dotson
Dotson is a key cog in our OL. As an OG who is over 30, the Rams won't need to break the bank to keep him. I'm betting he'll be re-signed before this season starts.

3. Kobe Turner
He is highly valuable and somewhat unique. Also has emerged as a team leader. Will be expensive, but won't set a new benchmark for DL.

Want them back, but...

4. Byron Young
I'm sure the Rams will want Young back, but he is on the old side for a guy finishing his rookie contract (29), and EDGE rushers are very expensive. If Josaiah Stewart continues to develop, I could see the Rams letting Young test the market.

5. Steve Avila/Warren McClendon
I'm grouping Avila and McClendon together because I believe we will sign one, but not both of these guys. Keagen Trost could potentially replace either, allowing for a cost savings.

Likely to Move On

6. Davante Adams
Adams is 34. How much does he have left in the tank? If he plays beyond this year, it would likely be on a short-term deal. If he gets his ring, maybe he decides to hang it up.

7. Coleman Shelton
No clear replacement on the roster at this point, but I won't be surprised if this is his last year with the Rams.

8. Colby Parkinson
As long as the Rams are using 13 sets, he might have enough value to be re-signed. With two recent 2nd round picks and Tyler Higbee at the position, though, I'm thinking someone else will offer him more.

9. Needs to Earn It

9. Ethan Evans
If he does not have a very strong year, I'm guessing we'll find a cheaper replacement.

OTHERS (Non-Starters):

Emmanuel Forbes - I'm assuming we don't pick up his 5th year option. Unless he really excels in his new (dime) role, I won't be surprised to see him go.

Stetson Bennett - with Ty Simpson in the fold, he probably is gone (unless Stafford retires).

Plus, McVay is rumored to like Klare in a hybrid TE/WR format which removes some pressure to spend a lot of cap dollars on a FA WR3.

Trost actually has the highest PFF grades of all the rookies by far, but he’s buried behind some outstanding OL players for now. He has a helluva future ahead, though.

I gut tells me not to go to sleep on Daniels, too.
For QBs, size matters.... but other things matters more (10 replies)

As we approach June, and then especially as we get into the real season, we're all going to be reminded of the real traits of NFL QBs that lead to winning in both the regular season and post season. And all those traits starts above the shoulders.

You don't have be 6'3" and above to be a really good NFL QB. Rogers was shorter than that. Caleb Williams is shorter than that (he's the same height as Simpson), and yet I hear no concern about his height.

As Polian said a couple of days ago on the XM NFL show: ALL the guys drafted can make "all the throws". They all have sufficient arm strength. Not canons, but plenty enough. Waner didn't have a strong arm... heck, neither did Peyton Manning. The issue comes down to making the RIGHT throws, at the proper velocity, ball location, and to the right guy at the right time.

Over and over we watch big, mobile, strong armed QBs selected, everyone wowed by their athleticism, size, howizter arm, and either not succeed to a suffiicent level to consistently win, or they simply go down in flames (Lance, Richardson types) because they don't or can't do what Polian says.

What a QB sees, how fast he can process it, how well he can innovate when a play breaks down, his demeanor and leadership, his work ethic, toughness (physical and mental) and ACCURACY are the real keys. Then of course his judgment and staying healthy.

Yes, size matters to a degree. Arm strength (like Stafford) can be a big differentiator IF all the previouisly mentioned critical traits are also met.

The point being that all these reasons that some just don't like Simpson, are the ones that ought to count the least. The ones that count the most, Snead, McVay and several former NFL QBs and GMs say he has in spades.

Is that a guarantee of anything? No. But it is a greater indicator of future success than height, weight, and athleticism. And, BTW, just look at his tape. He certainly isn't a blazer, but this young man IS athletic, IS mobile, and can and will make plays with his legs and is one of those who keeps his eyes downfield when he is scrambling.

And yet, the NFL pickers stil get sucked in by the wrong things.

And just to be clear: I was surprised by the pick. But, this young man has everything needed to develop into a fine NFL starting QB. And, barring the unforseeable, he's going to have the chance to develop and mature like few other drafted 1st rounder QBs ever get. Great HC. Great offensive minds to develop him. Great QB ahead of him so no pressure to play. Great organization. Surrounded by Superbowl level players and play makers.

I just can't find a reason to be down on this young man or the Rams selection of him. If he was tagged to have to play day one, that's a different matter.

But never attempting to do so is an automatic failure. That's why Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead deserves the benefit of the doubt when drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. LA needs a young quarterback now, if for no other reason to have on on the roster in 2027.

But San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch had an open smirk when asked about Los Angeles selecting Simpson. He tried to recover, but the damage was done. He openly scoffed at the selection.

But before 49ers fans howl, hoot, and holler over who was drafted in LA to rally behind John Lynch, let's check Lynch's success at drafting rookies at any position. To sum it up, he has angered and frustrated even his own beat writers. And deservedly so.

How can John Lynch forget his own QB drafting dissater?

We noticed that the San Francisco 49ers' own 2026 NFL Draft class has been given the cold shoulder as well. So even as John Lynch tosses shade at the LA Rams, he opens himself up for all sorts of criticism. Was he so blinded by Les Snead's strategy that he forgot to upgrade his own team's roster?

And then there is the case of drafting a quarterback, as we covered in a previous article:

"Round 1 QB Trey Lance (2021)- while many draft boards got this one wrong, the 49ers were hit with the double whammy of trading three first-round picks (2021, 2022, 2023) and a 2022 third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for an opportunity to select quarterback Trey Lance. Lance would only compete in San Francisco for two seasons."

After spending three first-round picks and four picks altogether on a rookie quarterback who didn't survive on the roster for more than two seasons. It is hardly an achievement that bestows any high ground. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Lynch has made some smart moves in the past. But when it comes to drafting a rookie quarterback, he is the last guy to pull that trigger.

Ty Simpson may work out, or he may not. But it didn't cost three first- round picks to find out. As always, thanks for reading.

Snead on why Simpson? Bottom line: It's all about fit, fit, fit (9 replies)

fit, fit, fit......... fit, fit and fit.

When he talks about how they draft players in general. The look at the tape, see how the guys play, and then it's all about fit, fit, fit, fit, fit and fit.

And, he makes no bones that the Rams are very secretive about the players they are interested in and that is why they haven't even done ONE of the 30 allowed visits since 2023. And even then, in 2023 they did that for ONE player. He divulges that this year alone, they did 66 private (generally secrative) and extensive visits with players they are interest in, by sending scouts and sometimes Snead or Sean to these players colleges or even homes!

And, the Simpson thing was made very hush-hush with Simpson also asked to keep it secret.

Not from a talking head, but directly from Snead's mouth. And, that Sean is right in the middle of it all.... and of course he and Snead did these visits together when they went to talk with Simpson.

The Rams just do it different. And, this is one reason that it is so hard to predict who they might draft.
