My Five Pre-Opening Day Wishes for the Rams (6 replies)

Here is my wish list for the Rams as they close out the offseason:

1. NO INJURIES. That's the biggest one, by far. Health is key.

2. NO SUSPENSIONS. I don't expect that anything will happen with Puka, and I'd say AJax is 50/50 to be shelved for 2-4 games. I'm hoping we have no more issues, and that we have everyone available for opening day.

3. OL DEPTH: This could come in two different ways. I would feel better if we signed a veteran OT, as has been discussed at length on this board. Alternatively, if we get stellar camp reports and preseason play from Keagan Trost, that will also give me a higher comfort level.

4. SPECIAL TEAMS CLARITY: I'd like to know who will return kicks, who will return punts, and if the Rams are 100% behind Harrison Mevis as the PK.

5. WARDROBE FUN: This has been such a good offseason so far that my wish list ends with something just for the fans. I am ready to buy another jersey (probably go with the safe choice - Stafford). Just waiting for the team to wow us with some new alternates (I look good in yellow!)

One perhaps surprising factor in making so many big moves actually happen is general manager Les Snead's reputation among his contemporaries for conducting business above board.

The blockbuster trade that brought Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett to LA was not a spur-of-the-moment transaction. In a recent interview with analyst Peter Schrager, Browns GM Andrew Berry confirmed that it was Snead's persistence and outstanding reputation that helped talks gain traction.

I spent an hour with @Browns GM Andrew Berry on Tuesday, hitting it all on "The Schrager Hour". Here's why Myles Garrett wasn't "shopped around" and why it was really never going to be a highest bidder situation.

A testament to Rams, too. @OmahaProd @ESPNCleveland @ESPNLA710 pic.twitter.com/mdIAHhavIt
— Peter Schrager (@PSchrags) June 10, 2026
Los Angeles may have been the only true landing spot for Garrett. While the Browns listened to other offers, only LA packaged a young star with draft picks that will allow Cleveland to restock its roster. Meanwhile, the Rams landed an elite veteran who is ready to compete for a championship.

Only Les Snead could have pulled off Rams' offseason

The fact that Snead orchestrated two blockbusters in one offseason is nothing short of miraculous. Coming off a season as the top-scoring NFL offense, the Rams' front office worked hard to upgrade a defense that faded away as last season wore on.

Hopefully two All-Pro additions - plus, don't forget, free agent Jaylen Watson - will get the job done.

On the one hand, Snead is a riverboat gambler. Few GMs would consider trading a former Defensive Rookie of the Year like Jared Verse, with multiple years of team control remaining, as a matter of principle. Snead stands alone in his class. His bold negotiations are something Rams fans have come to expect each offseason, along with all 31 other general managers in the league.

At the same time, though, making moves happen requires a component of trust. Unlike the public disaster that was the Ravens' nullified Maxx Crosby trade, Snead landed Garrett without a hitch. No backsies. No disingenuous maneuvers. The Rams' good-faith negotiations paid off. Garrett's first impression in Los Angeles has been everything one could hope it would be.

Angelenos are over the moon for good reason. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year joins a group newly constructed for postseason success. He's simply here to vault his new unit over the top.

After all, it's going to be difficult for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold to mount a comeback, much less overcome a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, with Garrett chasing him all over the football field.

Even against a backdrop of cutthroat competition, the NFL is a fraternity of sorts. It's a big deal when any executive compliments the reputation of another. It's the stuff that puts the Rams at the top of the call list when other teams are willing to move a player, and an advantage that keeps them perennially competitive.

As always, thanks for reading.

Garrett was not, however, the first member of the Cleveland Browns organization to be imported into Los Angeles. That distinction belongs to special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, who was hired in late January.

Not every fan loves the choice. The majority remain on the fence, taking a cautious wait-and-see stance for now. An enormous burden of pressure lies on Ventrone's shoulders. The NFC Championship Game culminated multiple losses attributable to special teams breakdowns last season.

To right this ship, Ventrone will have to maximize the Rams personnel he inherits. Punter Ethan Evans, kicker Harrison Mevis, and return specialists Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington headline the group of returning special teams playmakers, along with some-time contributors Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers.

Ventrone assumes critical task of redefining Rams special teams play

Although Ventrone is entering unfamiliar territory, venturing beyond the AFC North Division and out of the AFC altogether, he does have the benefit of bringing his former assistant, special teams coach Kyle Hoke, along with him to Los Angeles. It won't be easy, but if the pair can coach the Horns out of shooting themselves in the hoof, the 2026 group can have plenty of upside.

That starts with the reliability of Mevis, a former UFL kicker. Despite arriving midseason, he booted all but one of his field goal attempts through the uprights. Better still, he converted his 39 extra-point attempts. He was an outstanding six-of-seven from the ever-important 40-plus yard range on field goals, a solid accomplishment.

While the Rams stabilized the placekicking situation by swapping in Mevis for Joshua Karty, punt and kickoff coverage was painful to witness all through the year. Although Evans averaged 46.3 gross yards per punt (good enough for just 23rd place), his 39.6 net yards per punt were only good enough for 27th place.

Ironically, the Browns' averaged only 38.8 net yards under Ventrone, and they had two punts blocked. Hopefully the Rams will give him the resources to produce better results.

Why should fans feel optimistic, given the unit's woes just a year ago?

For starters, the team's addition of long snapper Joe Cardona should instantly improve blocking security on field-goal attempts. The Rams suffered several game-altering blocked kicks in 2025. Cardona is also superbly effective in covering punts. He managed five tackles last season, four more than the Rams got from the long snapper position as a whole.

General manager Les Snead did not stop there. He also added Detroit Lions special teams stud Grant Stuard. A Swiss Army knife playmaker, Stuard recorded 19 tackles across 375 special teams snaps and made three kickoff returns for an average of 24 yards.

Los Angeles cannot expect All-Pro performances from special teams. But that should not be the expectation. Merely eliminating egregious errors will be enough to put the group back on track. That is exactly what Snead aimed for by hiring Ventrone and adding the likes of Cardona and Stuard.

Yes, the additions of cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson and edge rusher Myles Garrett have rightfully hogged the headlines. Just don't overlook the Rams' special teams changes, either. What may appear to be minor upgrades bolster a unit with plenty of room to get better, patching a crucial weakness on what was already a Super Bowl-contending roster in 2025.

As always, thanks for reading.

Far from simply plugging a hole on the offensive line, McClendon supplied a substantial upgrade over the soon-to-be-retired veteran. He graded out at the top of his position in multiple categories, yet analysts and even fans consistently overlooked his unsung heroics.

McClendon finally received his dues courtesy of longtime NFL writer Dan Pizzuta, a guest on The Mina Kimes Show earlier this week. Assigned with choosing LA's 'x-factor,' Pizzuta tagged McClendon, a selection that met with Kimes' thorough approval.

"[He] stepped in really well for Rob Havenstein last year and really went underrated with how good he was," Pizzuta said. "He was 12th in pass-block win rate among tackles. He was second in run-block win rate, which is so huge for what this Rams team wanted to do last year, when so much of their offense with the heavier personnel was just, 'We are going to have successful runs that keep us ahead of the sticks,' putting up one of the best rushing success rates that we've seen in over a decade."

With sudden uncertainty over Alaric Jackson Jr.'s availability this season, Rams fans couldn't have picked a better time for an outsider to voice confidence in McClendon's abilities. That's one tackle spot they won't have to worry about in coming months.

McClendon is an anchor Rams fans have nothing to worry about

Naming McClendon the Rams' ex-factor is not just a warm-and-fuzzy pick meant to look good if his strong play continues (though Pizzuta would probably be happy with that, too). As he makes clear, it's based on real data that point to McClendon's central role in maintaining the efficacy of LA's offense.

In addition to dominating the win-rate category, McClendon allowed the fourth-lowest pressure rate, 3.1%, at his position. That checks the "keeping Matthew Stafford upright" part of Pizzuta's equation, which, combined with McClendon's dominance in run-blocking, makes his role as a starting o-lineman "really big for what [the Rams] can potentially do on offense."

Overall, McClendon was Pro Football Focus' seventh-ranked offensive tackle out of 89, and its fifth-ranked run blocker. He allowed one sack (eighth) and one quarterback hit (fifth) all season, and committed a single penalty (second). Maybe the rest of the world isn't ready to acknowledge it, but that is evidence of an elite offensive lineman.

Maybe Rams fans aren't ready, either. Ahead of the draft, tackle remained a position under discussion as a potential target area with the 13th overall pick. After Los Angeles took Missouri OT Keagen Trost in the third round, it was fun to wonder whether the rookie could give McClendon a run for his money.

True, that scenario could still play out, depending on Jackson's availability and whether there are one or two starting tackle spots up for grabs. Trost is a promising and versatile rookie, and McClendon has only 15 career starts. It's not crazy to question whether it's premature to pencil him into the starting lineup.

But Pizzuta is right. McClendon has proved he deserves the trust and respect of the Rams and their fanbase. Trost is, after all, a rookie, and now Jackson's status is up in the air. It's reassuring to know that the team can at least count on McClendon to hold down one side of the line.

Thanks to Kimes and Pizzuta for reminding everyone that his ability is one thing the Blue and Yellow shouldn't be concerned about this season.

Behind wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, who will get the most targets this season?

Let's step back for a moment. What does this offense value? Despite experimenting with speed, neither DeSean Jackson nor his understudy, Tutu Atwell, moved the needle much. Conversely, the offense has found success in the physical tough-guy receiver who can run routes with precision.

Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua have mastered that prototype. Although he has yet to prove it, Jordan Whittington fits the mold to a T.

So why hasn't he found his footing? In two seasons, Whittington has been targeted just 53 times, resulting in 40 receptions for 464 yards. He has yet to find the end zone. But don't dismiss him just yet. He could be in for a substantial role change in 2026.

Jordan Whittington is weapon Rams didn't know they needed

Whittington is fast approaching his Day of Reckoning. It's step up or step back time, and the former sixth-round pick knows he must seize the moment. He's been reliable when targeted, managing to catch better than 75 percent of the passes thrown his way. His inconsistent involvement in the offense is not due to a lack of talent. Rather, he simply hasn't had the opportunity.

Whittington has suffered from the influx of offensive strategies and playmakers that have steered much of the action elsewhere. The Rams' offense typically relies on one or two dominant receivers, anyway, and last season head coach Sean McVay leaned into his tight ends more than ever.

But this season, that could swing back in Whittington's favor. As defenses hone in on the tight ends, tertiary receiver options like himself will be the outlet for redirected targets.

The two rules for success in LA's offense as a receiver is to block well and convert on catchable passes. Whittington checks both boxes. As is the case for many young playmakers, it all comes down to opportunity.

Perhaps he can find inspiration in the fact that running back Blake Corum finally found his rhythm in 2025, after being mostly irrelevant as a rookie. Can Whittington make a similar jump?

Just think what he could do with even a modest share of targets. Even with Nacua and Adams leading the charge, there is room for Whittington to earn a larger role, as other LA receivers have had further down the depth chart in seasons past.

For example, even competing with Nacua and Kupp, Atwell garnered 62 and 67 targets, respectively, in 2023 and 2024. Based on his career production, a similar increase for Whittington - equivalent, say, to Atwell's target share in '23 - would give him well over 500 receiving yards. That should easily be enough to be the Rams' No. 3 receiver in 2026.

Don't be discouraged that LA did not select rookie receiver Makai Lemon, many fans' circled target on Day 1 of the 2026 draft. Rookies struggle at blocking in their first season, limiting their workload. That won't be a problem with a Whittington. That's all the more reason why, this season, he could prove to be the weapon the Rams didn't even realize they needed.

As always, thanks for reading.
