OL position outlook for 2020

OL is getting its own post because of the sheer amount of moving parts.

Under contract for 2020:
Bobby Evans - cap hit 0.85m
David Edwards - cap hit 0.65m
Joe Noteboom - cap hit 0.92m
Austin Corbett - cap hit 1.16m - if cut 0.83m cap hit
Brian Allen - cap hit 0.83m - if cut 0.34m cap hit
Chandler Brewer - cap hit 0.59m - if cut no dead money
Jamil Demby - cap hit 0.66m cap hit - if cut no dead money
Rob Havenstein - cap hit 7.8m - if cut 6.2m cap hit - if traded 2.4m cap hit

Free Agents:
Andrew Whitworth - UFA (he can meet and sign with any team)
Austin Blythe - UFA (he can meet and sign with any team)
Coleman Shelton - ERFA (If Rams offer him any kind of contract he is under their control for that amount for at least 1 more year)

Positional review:
To say the oline had a rough year is an understatement. Although they were low on the list of sacks allowed, they gave up too much pressure, little room to run and way too many penalties. And I'm not sure what to make of the penalties, but I know not enough was made of it this year, at least not on this board as far as I know. Whitworth was the 3rd most penalized OL this year with 13. Was some of that covering for a new LG? Maybe, but he regressed, by more then a little. Havs had 8 penalties in 8 games. LOL. He looked slow, his feet looked heavier then usual and was ineffective. And he had his RG from last year, so his excuse was what? Oh and Edwards, for as much as I like the kid, had 7 in half a season, but none after week 13. Allen was overmatched at OC, Blythe was overmatched at RG, but looked better at OC and Noteboom was slowly coming along before he got hurt. Corbett was the weak link once he was installed at LG, as I thought Edwards and Evans did a nice job of solidifying the right side.

Free agency & draft priority: med/high

This thing all hinges on 2 guys: Whitworth and Havenstein. The Rams said they would sit down with Whitworth and discuss his future. That tells me a couple of things. 1. They respect him enough not to lowball him in FA and embarrass him. 2. They are probably getting a feel for if he would be open to really mentoring his replacement. If Whit gets a deal, I think its probably team friendly, maybe incentive based if thats possible with a OT, and 1 year only. Personally I would like to see him back for 1 more year. I'm scared of Noteboom at LT next year, and not sure Evans is ready to be a LT in the NFL.

As far as Havenstein goes, I'm a bit biased since I never liked the pick. he just doesn't fit what the Rams are doing from a scheme standpoint and he was ineffective on top of that. But they paid him and now are stuck with him. let me be perfectly clear on this statement: NO ONE is trading for an overpaid, underperforming RT that was a penalty machine and is coming off injury. I would think the only way a trade would work is if the Rams trade him and a say a 4th for a 7th round pick. I really think the Rams are stuck with him for 1 more year. Thank goodness he is their only high paid OL on the roster.

Blythe is almost certainly gone, I just don't see him as in their plans esp. as a RG. Maybe at OC. Demby is almost certainly a cap casualty, and probably Brewer at some point.

Assuming Whit comes back for 1 year: you have Whit LT, Evans/Noteboom LG - Allen OC - Edwards RG - Havs/Evans RT. IF Whit doesn't come back its Note/Evans LT - Note/Evans/Corbett LG - Allen OC - Edwards RG - Havs RT

As far as FA replacements, I'd look for cheap middle of the road guys. I see no scenario where Scherff gets 12.5m from the Rams.to play LG. Xavier Sua'filo, Joe Haeg would be names that make more sense in FA at OG. OC is thin and LT is even thinner.

In the draft, I'd look long and hard at 1 of the top 2 centers, Tyler Biadasz from Wisconsin (had an up and down bowl game against Oregon) and Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma. 1 of the 2 might be available. Both fit and both are bigger and stronger then anything on the Rams roster. i'd also look at a middle of the draft LG like Ben Bredeson from Mich. Has played in power man and outside zone and handled his business today against Alabama. Won't wow you but he wins and plays with an edge. He easily available on early day 3. Scott Frantz from Kansas St is my day 3 LT prospect I like this year.

Re: Rams tried for Bitonio

The Los Angeles Rams made a couple of trades to try to improve their roster as they attempt to get back to the Super Bowl. Beyond the blockbuster deal that netted them Jalen Ramsey for a pair of first round picks and a fourth round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Rams first tried to address the offensive line.

As reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams initially tried to trade for Browns stud left guard Joel Bitonio. They offered corner Marcus Peters, who was drafted by John Dorsey when he was the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. After Dorsey left Kansas City, the Chiefs traded Peters to the Rams for a first round pick.

Dorsey turned down the laughable offer, but then countered with Austin Corbett, second year offensive lineman that hasn't materialized into a contributor. The Rams ultimately made a deal with the Browns for Corbett, then sent Peters to the Baltimore Ravens for a fifth round pick and linebacker Kenny Young. That opened the door for the deal for Ramsey.

Bitonio is one of the Browns better players and should be a prized possession. He's enjoying another terrific year after being named 2nd team All-Pro last season. Nevertheless, it was a positive for Dorsey to find a way to move Corbett for a draft asset. The former 33rd overall pick in 2018 was retained in the hopes that he might become something, but if a good offer came along, they could go ahead and try to recover some of the value lost in the selection.

A fifth round pick in 2021 is a forgettable pick, but is one of those things it's nice to have when that draft rolls around. The Browns will have an extra pick lying around, either to go ahead and grab another player or to include as a sweetener in another trade.

And yet, I’m not in favor of extending Whit, even at $7-9 million. I think that he’s turned the corner and will only continue to backslide. Not crazy about moving either Edwards or Evans over to LOT until Boom is ready, though. Here again, a new temporary hole would have been created. Don’t know if there’s another player currently on the roster that they would trust to fill in temporarily at either RG or RT. ‘Course, if Hav remains then that’s a moot point.

Like I said, this could be very tricky depending on how they really feel about Corbett, Blythe, Allen, Whit, Boom’s health, and Hav.
Re: I would think

I would really like to know what happened to Havs. This kid was nearly perfect as a rookie as I believe he allowed NO sacks. He continued to play well when healthy and got the big contract. I know he came off an injury this off season. Was he still out of shape from it? Was he still affected which restricted his movements? It all makes little sense that he just got bad. He is young and very strong. Sometimes he was initially beat off the snap by speed rushers but could use his long arms and amazing strength to stop their rushes. I think there's more to the mystery and the Rams coaching and medical staff know what's up. Could be his ankle of knee slowed him down a hair and that is the difference in his play. Maybe he's recovered and will work on his foot speed to get back to being a top ROT. I really hope so. For him and the Rams. If he comes back at 100 percent, they resign Whit for a year to play LOT and keep Blythe at OC then we are a couple of guards away from a solid line. Between Boom, Corbett, Evans and Edwards we should be able to start two and have depth with the other two. All that being said I agree with the idea of drafting a top OC if one is bailable with our 2nd round pick. The best teams have a top center and we never seem to prioritize the position. I've advocated for this for years. The last time I remember the Rams drafting a center high was Bern Brostek and he anchored a good line for years. I remember Rich Saul too. We should get a top player for the spot. It is tres important!

Looking at Havenstein, I would disagree about trade value. They're not going to net a lot for him but if they could get a 6th for Greg Robinson in 2017 they can get a 5th for Havenstein. He, at least, has a track record of having played well in 2015, 2017 and 2018. I'm not necessarily advocating for a trade but someone would want him- especially a team after the Draft that does not get an OT on days 1 or 2 or even afterward (Robinson was traded in June '17).

People have said "well, if Whitworth will take $7-9M..." But to me they can't afford that either. Whitworth is off the books for 2020 so $7-9M is not saving money, it's shelling out $7-9M... I think the Rams have to move on. Noteboom should play tackle- either starting at LT or as the swing backup. But he's not a guard.

I am all for re-signing Blythe at center IF they can add a big, strong LG. Someone brought up Bills' LG Quinton Spain the other day. Not saying he's the guy but someone like him that won't command a big salary and has size and experience would fit the bill. I'm also in favor of drafting one of the top 2 centers but picking 52nd overall it's risky they will be there. Could have to move up 10 spots to get one. Last year 3 centers went in the top 48 and the year before 3 went in the top 40. Yet in 2017 the first center off the board didn't happen until #58. So who knows...

Really curious what the Rams staff thinks about Corbett. He played better than I expected he would coming in but is he a viable 2020 starter? Personally I'd love the OL to shake out where Corbett and Allen were the 6th and 7th guys.

Agree on Hav. I think he's tradeable after the Rams eat the $2.4M in dead money. They probably wouldn't get a 5th for him but salary relief, not the draft comp would be the point anyway.

If they determine that Noteboom should be the swing backup which allows him to ease back in from his injury, who would be the LT if Whit doesn't return?

Totally agree on Blythe

I agree on Blythe most likely being our center next year. He was a noticeable improvement from Allen and he would benefit from stronger play at the guard positions. He's going to check off two rather important boxes as we improve the OL next year. He's going to be cheap and he's a known commodity. I really think the answer would be totally different if we only had one or two holes to fill, but given the fact that 3 or more positions are in flux next year, staying with him may make the most sense for now as it would allow us to possibly spend our 2nd round pick on a different OL position or possible a C/G combo type of player.

I also openly wonder if there are going to be any thoughts of kicking Havenstein down to guard moving forward?? Speed and lateral movement seem to be his Achilles heel so I wonder if that type of transition was ever considered for him?

HR
