NFL quarterbacks drafted in the first round with fewer than 20 career college starts

Only 4 with 15 or less starts.

According to AI...

AI Overview

NFL quarterbacks drafted in the first round with fewer than 20 career college starts include Anthony Richardson (13), Mitchell Trubisky (13), Dwayne Haskins Jr. (14), Cam Newton (14), Mark Sanchez (16), Trey Lance (17), Kyler Murray (17), Mac Jones (17), and Ryan Tannehill (19).

These passers were selected largely on their physical potential and physical traits, though the historical track record for prospects with such limited collegiate experience has been highly volatile.

Cam Newton might be the biggest name who also had the most success but he was the #1 overall pick and a legit Heisman trophy contender.

Is Ty any better than anyone of these dudes? Is he equal to or worse than these guys? A career backup or eventual starter?

There are some pretty big busts on that list. All eyes will be on Ty this preseason and the next preseason and the next one after that too! lol

I will be rooting hard for him unless he gives me reason to not have any confidence in him. As many here have mentioned, he is on the right team with the right offensive system. I was going to say the right coaches too but I really don't know how well McVay will do developing a kid as raw as Ty is. Time will tell. :beercan

Thank you

And the quoted statement holds true in regards to your quote about Milroe beating out Simpson as they weren't running the same offense.

"We’re not necessarily a Jalen Milroe offense right now," Grubb said. "Just, Jalen was a super talented runner, and that was probably a part of the game plan every week, and was smart last year by the offensive staff. So I think that’s probably the biggest difference.”

Milroe's athleticism was his greatest strength - building the offense around that always made sense. Unfortunately, the offense became too stale and too predictable down the stretch of the season, particularly as Milroe began to struggle even more in the passing game as time wore on.

Things will be different this year. Grubb was brought in as the offensive coordinator to replace Nick Sheridan. He won't be reinventing the wheel - it's still the Kalen DeBoer offense. But it will feel almost like an entirely new system for Alabama fans. With Simpson at the helm, Grubb will call the offense more true to what they ran at Washington, and not the hybrid system they ran last year to take advantage of Milroe's skills.
[bamahammer.com]

The "Milroe offense/concepts" was more of a college game offense due his explosive talent and what was said to be his struggles reading defenses and processing information. The offense under Simpson went back to more of an NFL type offense. Thus, and I quote myself in repeating that Milroe's NFL projection has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not Simpson should have been able to beat him out in college.

And again, I still question the legitimacy of this so-called competition with Milroe coming off a good year coupled with his loyalty to Bama/DeBoer after many players left when Saben retired. Even when Milroe struggled he wouldn't pull him.

I have no idea whether Simpson is going to pan out with the Rams or not. I hope so. But the entire exchange from my viewpoint has been my offering context and/or questioning what I deem to be bad information.

There is certainly a risk/reward consideration with any draft pick. Maybe Simpson doesn't work out. But maybe Lemon wouldn't have worked out, either. (I'm looking at Lemon because he was available at 13 and was the odds on favorite to be the Rams' pick in Vegas. He seemed to be a popular choice among this board's posters as well, probably the most often mocked guy in the draft.)

Here's an article that tracked draftees from 2006 thru 2021. [www.pff.com] The data says that the Day 1 hit rate for QBs is 63.3% while the Day 1 hit rate for WRs is 56.9%. So there's the risk for each pick.

And what's the possible reward? Simpson might be a franchise QB, Lemon might be a WR1.

Statistically Simpson is less risk with a higher reward (the assumption being that a franchise QB is more valuable to an NFL tram than a WR1).

Not saying I would've taken Lemon or not at 13. I would've liked to trade down but I don't think that was an option due to it takes 2 to trade and I am not sure there were any good offers.

Simpson does have a "higher reward" but I think the risk factor might be higher than it is with Lemon.

I would think Lemon should be more "NFL ready" due to having more playing time in college than Simpson did.

Agree there is risk with every position in the Draft. Including the First overall pick. lol

The icing on the cake

The best part of the Simpson trade is the Rams are a better team this year for having drafted Simpson than they would have been if they had drafted anyone else.

If the Rams had drafted anyone else they would still have Verse and their 2027 first round pick and that team would not be as strong as the current team.

Why do I make that claim?

Prior to the draft the Rams were already SB favorites [theramswire.usatoday.com]: According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Rams are now the favorites to win it all in 2026 at +750. The Seahawks are second at +900, followed by the Bills (+1000) and Ravens (+1100).

The odds didn't move when the Rams drafted Simpson. And they wouldn't have moved no matter who they picked at 13. So a Rams team with <rookie of your choice> and Verse would still have been slight favorites to win the SB.

Drafting Simpson freed up the 2027 1st rounder since the Rams no longer had to keep if for a potential move for a QB. Here's one article that makes this point "How Ty Simpson helped the Rams trade for Myles Garrett" [sports.yahoo.com], but there are a lot of others out there.

So what happened when the Rams got Garrett? From this article [sports.yahoo.com]: Rams Super Bowl odds have shortened from +750 to +550 following the blockbuster trade

According to that same article the Ravens and Bills are tied for the second favorite to win the SB at +1000 and the Seahawks are behind them at +1100.

In an all-in-year the Rams team with Simpson and Garrett is +550 with the second favorite at +1000.

A Rams team with a position player at 13 and Verse would still be +750 with the second favorite at +900.

So this means they are going to let Bennett have a real shot at the role.

But my guess is Simpson wins the QB2 role for one reason: Bennett will clear waivers and they'll be able to put them on the PS. Which means choosing Simpson = additional roster spot for special teams.

All that aside Bennett may throw a monkey wrench into that plan if he plays well enough in preseason. That could potentially convince some team to claim him for their QB2 role. But chances are, due to his size and his year off, that he'll clear waivers.

He was being talked about as a potential 1st round pick entering the 2024 season.

While one may not have liked him, do we really believe that Kalen DeBoer was going to have a legit competition at the QB spot during his first season at Alabama? While it's very well possible that Simpson might not have won, there was no chance in HELL that was going to happen..

And if we want to credit DeBoer for Simpson, should Milroe have regressed under him?

Simpson played in the SEC behind the 110th ranked OLine which helped produce the NCAA's 128th ranked rushing attack @ 3.35 yards per carry and his targets almost led the nation in dropped passes. Despite this, the team went 11-4 and won a playoff game.

Pennix, on the other hand, played in the PAC 12 with a much better OLine and rushing attack that averaged 4.6 & 5.0 yards per carry. In one season his 4th and 5th string WRs were Germie Bernard & Denzel Boston (2026 top 50 draft selections).

None of this means that Simpson is destined for stardom, but the lack of context amazes me.

As for McVay "loving the kid"? I have no idea if that's true or not and based on his reaction at the Draft, I still have some doubts. Regardless of what happened prior to the pick that might have made McVay upset, imo, if he really loved the pick and was truly "excited" about the pick, he would've at least seemed a little bit happy about it. At least enough to make him forget about whatever he was mad about until after the pick of someone he "loved" and really wanted. McVay didn't even smile a little smile. lol Not once during that whole conference discussing the pick he allegedly "loved" so much.

Do you really believe that the Rams would use the #13 pick on a QB if McVay didn't love the kid???

A post Stafford bridge that may pan out with good coaching ala dree Brees or a Purdy.
Remember, that journeyman nobody of a QB - Mac Jones - beat our SB bound Rams last year. Hell, I was thinking of trading a 3rd to 5th rounder for Mac Jones to be Stafford's back-up to save our #13 draft pick this year for another player.

IF...McVay is still here after we win another SB or until Stafford leaves...I still think the Rams trade for a Vet QB to be our next Stafford if Simpson ends up average and a back-up type QB. I think the drafting of Simpson was a hopeful/wishful nod to being responsible for the future and getting a back-up this season when we NEVER pick high. Because if Stafford got injured this year and we had no one behind him...how irresponsible would that look like? It's kinda what our OL depth is gonna be this year...scary with no room for losses. I was hoping for 2 OTs with our 2nd & 3rd rounders instead Klare...tho we got Trost. Our 2nd should be an OT but they rolled the dice on Alaric and that is already showing diminishing returns.

Anyway, QB is the most important position and the Rams are never near the top of the draft so they rolled the dice with Simpson. I still think the kid's a bit too wide-eyed now... but he's got good DNA as Alyo says as a coaches son...but also with the intangibles and qualities that shine in a McVay system. Rarely is a rookie QB ever ready to play in year 1. It's a smart decent gamble of the #13 pick for the most important position on the field since we don't have anyone behind Stafford. btw - If Garopolo doesn't retire and came back to the Rams this year I think the Rams might not pick Simpson

I have a hard time reading McVay and telling what "type" of QB he likes. He crapped on Goff, a number 1 pick in favor of the Wolf and also liked the Wolf enough to keep him on the team as long as he did.

What did we hear in defense of keeping the Wolf? "Well, he is a smart QB who knows the system and has some mobility". Turned out he DID know the system but wasn't talented enough to execute it consistently at this level and his "mobility" almost got him killed. lol

The we have Mr. Bennett who I originally like when we drafted him. We also heard how "smart" he was and also came with a lot of collegiate accolades too. We heard McVay "loved" Bennett too but Bennett's preseason and practice reps weren't enough to get him to QB2 and now we drafted his replacement at 13.

McVay has had chances to "develop" QB's that HE chose and gave up on one that was a first round pick because he couldn't develop him any further.

Not saying McVay didn't help those QB's grow or develop but if he did, he only developed them so far and none of them were developed enough to be starters except for Goff who has since been voted to the Probowl and played on some big games while putting up some good stats too.

I guess I question McVay's "evaluations" of QB's more than anything because so far, none of his chosen QB's have been any good.
