Grant kept his team on the field for the full 15 minute halftime, some were on the bench, others up moving around, maybe rotating as a rock-jawed Grant paced the sideline, not saying much.

The Vikings were ready to play when the third quarter began. They had endured the cold and were ready for more - their bodily metabolism set for what was to come: fingers and faces nearly frostbitten,sinuses and bronchia ramped up, noses running, to moderate the cold air and keep lungs accilmated to extract oxygen from it, blood pulled to central organs and major muscle groups. They kept hydrated and kept moving just enough to rest some but not leave that cold air metabolic state.

Rams, meanwhile, went indoors. Heated lockerroom, warm drinks, blankets over cold feet and legs, coach's idea was to get their bodies fully warmed up, ready to hit the field in the second half.

But that's not the way bodies react to physical exertion in cold folowed by warmth and rest.

Skiiers in my part of the world will take only a short break between runs - rehydrate, maybe with warm Gatorade, and replace burned calories and protien with a small bowl of chili, served in a paper bowl and munched down outdoors with a plastic spoon, a potty break and then back on the lift for another run.

They know what the Rams didn't: Getting warm after physical exertion in the cold is good - if you intend to stay indoors. You might blow your nose a couple of times until mucous production, ramped up to combat the cold and protect nasal/bronchial tissues from cold air burn, drops back to normal. You might wind up taking an involuntary nap and blood flows from the central area to the extremeties.

Step outdoors again and your lungs feel the harsh bite of the cold. Your respiration slows down until mucous preoduction ramps up again. Blood is pulled to the interior again. Try to do too much, at first, and the muscles don't respond - they're blood-starved and fatigue easily. Everything slows down until you reacclimate to the cold-heat-then cold again states, compounded by physical demands of extreme performance.

All of that happened to the Rams coming out of the tunnel. They were torpid, sluggish. The nap, or nap-like state, left them like bears coming out of hibernation. Bud Grant anticipated this and his Vikings were ready to go on the attack again - their bodies ready for action.

Left on the field for halftime, glaring across at the Vikings while the Vikings glared at them, the Rams could have taken up where they left off. Instead, they were physically unable to handle a team that had remained acclimated and whose body metabolisms hadn't been put through the stress of cold then hot then cold again and expected to perform at optimum level. The Met was a tough place to play in the Winter in that Playoff game vs Vikes in 69 Deacon talks about it in his book when the Rams were up 17-7 in the 2nd half looking to add more a potential TD or FG the Rams were inside the 15 after a big play but a Ref thru a flag for holding as Deacon explained the Viking D Player knocked the Ram to the Ground but the Ref thought it was a takedown but it wasn't Deacon continued to say had the Rams gone up 24-7 the Vikes would not have comeback & back then holding calls were 15 yds, also Deacon said he lost faith in officiating then. That game was considered one of the most vicious hard-hitting games of All-time. Then the Mud Bowl in 77 Knox turned & looked at Namath in the 2nd half in a look can you go & Namath nodded no. Namath in an interview later felt bad & explained it was a torn Hamstring. Knox was the Jets OL Coach in 67 but left to be the Lions OL Coach in 68. A tough one for Knox as he missed out Winning a SB with Namath & the Jets in 68 something that eluded him his whole career sadly. GO RAMS!

I do remember the mud bowl but vaguely. It's such a shame Namath was just a shell of his former self. Although his time as a Ram was very short, it still was cool seeing him in horns!

Knox was a h#ll of a HC. His one weakness was not being able to evaluate QB's good enough but his teams were always competitive. Not sure about that as Namath's knees on the sloppy track would have been a recipe for disaster IMHO, however, Haden's small hands limited his ability to grip the football, however, nobody in that quagmire could have been good. It was just Knox never had much luck in postseason and that carried with him to Buffalo & Seattle. Allen also had some tough losses, but in postseason you have to take chances sometime that in the regular season, you don't ordinarily do.

Fred Dryer talked about that with Knox, that he played it the same way in post season as the regular season and teams were ready for them. True and when Knox finally got the Vikings in Southern California, it poured non stop the whole week. Lundy came into the league in 1957 when I was a junior in high school. I liked him from the start - amazing athlete, quick and graceful, strong, he did it all as a defensive end and also went both ways as a pass-catching tight end. P{layers going both ways had faded by then, except for a few - like Lundy who was a for-real threat and later Joe "Refrigerator" Perry, who was an occasional goal-line fullback for the Bears, as much a novelty as an actual weapon. Lundy's stats, for as long as he played as a receiver, were pretty respectable, drawing on his allstar basketball hands and jumping skills. He was drafted by the NBA in addition to the NFL coming out of Perdue, but chose footbasll.

I watched my first pro games in person as a student at San Francisco State (an education in itself) in 1961, when Deacon Jones was a rookie and the Rams were already a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks with Lamar.. For the remainder of my college career and life after in San Francisco, I watched the Rams-49er games at Kezar. Lamar was always one of my favorite Rams to watch. I remember when Merlin came into the league, and when the Rams traded for Rosey Grier.

When I fgirst saw the Rams-49ers at Kezar in 1961, I was struck by something that didn't show well on black-and-white small screen TV: "Wow - Lamar Lundy is the tallest guy onb the field." And he got around. Hands in air he prevented passes over his part of the field and occasionally knocked one down. He picked three for touchdowns over the course of his career - still a record for defensive linemen, I believe.
