I didn't become a Rams fan because the horns "looked like a Ram", I fell in love with the look of the helmet, period and I bet many others feel the same way.

Having said that, I most likely would still be attracted to the new helmet too if that was the design back then but I am not sure. There was something about the thicker, meet in the middle, fully curled horn that just looked right. It was perfect regardless if it was White, Yellow or Gold.

Any iteration of that original design will just look like a cheap "knock off" to me. Look at the get-off from the line of scrimmage in a football game - especially NFL level.

There's a certain similarity.

When one team at the LOS has the depiction of a male bighorn sheep's set of horns on their helmets, it must have a certain effect. This is not a pansy game.

As to the horn design: In nature I sometimes see full-curl rams, more often see 5/8, 3/4 or other degrees of curl in the horns. All horns, in mature rams, have a base several inches thick and are only a couple of inches, at most, separated at the base. Those horns are all massive, huge. They're designed for impact. It's the mass of the horns, not the degree of curl, that you notice.

In the wild, bighorn sheep can hold their own fairly well against wolves and mountain lions. They win some and lose some and over the centuries manage to survive - thrive, because no prey animal after them wants to get knocked off a rocky talus slide or jagged peak by those horns, driven by the full force of a ram charging at even a short distance. When you see it in the wild, you're awed and amazed at the sheer power of those animals. Photo below is a young ram with 3/4 curl, massive horns that nearly touch at the base, who took a look our way before continuing down the rockslide to the grass below. I can post more photos of bighorns in the wild if anybody would like to see them. Let me know in comments below or PM me.

As to the trophy animal aspect of male bighorn sheep, I can respect the position of those who choose not to participate or object to hunting. I won't get into those discussions here although I am a hunter. I am also a fan of a game played by dominant males of my own specie that acts out a certain urge for territorial acquisition by violence that is rooted deep in my nature, but is brought under control of other parts of our nature.

The horns do have an edge, as it were, along the outside. They are not perfectly round. Adding a graphic element to simulate that edge, OK. Slimming the whole horn down, not OK. Making the whole profile of the horn skinny, to make it more domestic goat-like, not OK.

And I think that's where the beef is, and has always been.

also, hate to break it to you, but most profile pics of a ram(big horn sheep) the horns look more like the current shape of the horns on the helmet than the old horn design with the curl if you want to get technical











the "bighorn" sheep found in the western US have the current design style horns....but the ones found in Canada seem to have the old school curl according to this




I hated the new helmet at first, but it quickly grew on me(and most of us) and imo it is still by far the best looking helmet in the NFL ....it kinda makes the old hemelt look dated, although I still love the old one and wouldn't be mad if they went back to it, but I like the new one too...the colors look great too

Demoff had the perfect example of how a Rams horn should look on a helmet. It was already on the helmet! lol In 2 more years it will be the 80th anniversary of Mr. Gerhke's creating that iconic/historic design.

In all those years since 1948, Demoff was the ONLY one who thought it would be a good idea to change it and it wasn't for the better. He made it worse.

That tells me he thinks he knows better than the entire Rams fan base. Well, he was/is wrong. I do think he realizes it now but it's too late and his ego won't let him admit the mistake and change it back. What a shame.

I would respect Demoff if he did admit the mistake but we all know that will never happen.

Demoff has done a lot of good for the Rams but changing the uni definitely was not one of them. I am hoping his eventual replacement changes it back. It's actually mind boggling how a "self professed" life long Rams fan would think it was a good idea to neuter the helmet horn. Based on his past history I have my doubts he really is/was a Rams fan. I think he might not have been telling the truth when he proclaimed his Ram fandom. lol

It is interesting how they have been slowly and subtly been changing the uni to look more and more like the one he got rid of. Kinda like admitting he was wrong without actually admitting it publicly.

I am not buying the reason for the redesign being they wanted to "attract" a younger fan base. I see no reason why younger fans wouldn't be attracted to the Ferragamo's. After all, those uni's attracted a very large fan base wearing the Ferramgamo's. They were/are loved by Rams fans and non Rams fans alike.
