Considering our SB window as of today, was Simpson the "right" pick for us at 13?

Since there is a lot emotion about this pick I thought I would post a simple poll. Most of the time a Top 13 pick is projected to make an impact almost immediately.

Yes or no.

No "maybe in a year or two" answers. Might as well get all the opinions in one thread! lol

I didn't include considering anything that happens after June 1.

The poll was specifically meant for "at the time of the poll". I think we all know that to make pick 13 more justifiable, future acquisitions would be a determining factor in the end.

Having said that, I do agree if we add the right players later, the #13 pick won't matter as much as long as we acquire the needed depth that have people questioning the Simpson pick in the first place ie; OL,WR, DL, CB or LB. For lack of a better word at the moment.

A so-called Super Bowl window has absolutely nothing to do with the 13th selection in this draft class. Especially, in a weaker blue chip draft class.

Most rookies don't make immediate impacts (note there's a difference between taking snaps and making a legit impact) and player acquisitions didn't end after that selection.

It absolutely does have something to do with our SB window. I agree most rookies don't make immediate impacts. Especially on McVay's teams. lol

The argument is about getting someone, maybe another weapon for Stafford or backup depth that could fill in THIS year if needed.

If Puka and or Adams go down or miss some time, drafting a possible fill in would go a long way to helping us get to the SB.

We all agree our current roster is pretty much set and no rookie would have much of a shot at playing unless the above happens. The problem most with taking a player that will sit for 2 maybe 3 years will have absolutely no chance of helping our SB aspirations THIS year even if Stafford went down for a bit.

Also, it doesn't only have to be an offensive weapon either. It could've been an OL, DL, CB or LB that would have a better chance of getting play time than a Simpson would.

Hopefully we stay healthy and nobody misses any time and it won't matter who was picked at 13 or any other spot. :beercan

But other options remain: free agency and trade. If the Rams opt not to use FA and/or trade to do what most of us want them to do what does that say?

Picking Simpson was a mistake?

Or the Rams brain trust don't think this year's team needs any more help?

Hint: It's that second thing.

The Rams are not shy about trading for a difference maker when they think they need one. And I would like to remind you that Rams are moving away from 11 personnel and toward 13 personnel. We all are. We all seen it happening as the season went on but that doesn't change my mind about the importance of WR3 with all the issues from Puka and an older Adams.

As for Klare, we have no idea how he will do. Odds are most likely he doesn't see very much playing time at all due to that "finest TE room in the league" that you mention. At this stage of his NFL career, he's just another "hyped up" rookie that some will call a future starter without even seeing him play an NFL down. Just like some did with Mumps last year. lol

There's a reason they drafted Daniels later on in the draft. It's because they know the value as well of a WR3 and also seen the results of Mumps, Whit and Smith had last year.

So, again, for me the value of a WR3 this year isn't how many snaps he gets at WR3...it's how many snaps will be needed by the WR3 if WR1 or WR2 go down for a period and I think that was the point that was being made.

Yep, thats the point I was making and I agree on everything you said.

When is a good time to draft a QB? Or is it that ya'll are just better with giving a future haul for one? And I know the answer is actually tied to many debates, of which this is but one.

To me, the #13 in this draft was not as consequential as a boat load of future #1s. I don't see a #3 receiver or additional lineman being the trigger that puts us over the top. Our trade did that.

I voted "No" because we are in such a competitive division and we need to add more talent that will help this season. There were players like OG Loane, Edge Bain and WR Lemon that would most likely make significant impacts. I'm impressed with what I saw out of Simpson last season, but since he only played one season, he's a gamble at pick 13. I would've rather drafted Nussmeier in the later rds. I fear we will be a WC team again.

Honestly, do you really believe any of the players you listed would have given us a significant ‘SB boost’ this year?

Outstanding players all, but not gonna push us over the top this year.

And then we would be scrambling for a QB to bring in next year. At Gawd only cap and trade value cost.

I actually do. The 3 I listed have specific strengths that might give us a plus 1 or 2 game advantage which is needed in our division.

4.) If the Rams think they need an upgrade at WR3 they will get one via FA or trade. And if they don't bring anyone in it doesn't mean they blew it by not drafting Lemon. It means they don't think it's necessary.

Personally I think the Rams should bring in a vet WR who could serve as WR3 this year and move up to WR2 next year. The thing is, if the Rams think they need a better WR3 or another edge or another OL they will get one. FA is still going on and now that the Rams have their QB of the future in-house they can use next year's 1st rounder in a trade.

Not drafting a contributor at 13 doesn't close the door on bringing in a contributor. And I might point out that anyone they bring in will have an NFL resume, unlike anyone they could have picked at 13.

Personally I like the idea of getting a vet contributor (assuming the Rams think they need one) and drafting their heir apparent this year over relying on a rookie picked at 13 and trying to get a successor QB down the road.

First, this Daniels kid really intrigues me. I see potential for something special from him, 6th round notwithstanding. I’m fighting myself not to get too excited too early but the more I learn the more I like him. He might become a fine WR3 himself and maybe better once Adams leaves. Rams liked him enough to trade up for him costing 2 precious draft picks, after all.

2. Rams only had 5 picks so they had to prioritize them carefully. I must say that I’m impressed with their first 4 picks at least. The 5th, Keenan, must win me over at this point.

3. Klare is rumored to be able to run some WR type routes when needed. So he might be further evidence of Rams having extra ‘WR type’ help already on the field.

Bottom line is Rams seem committed to more and more 13 personnel at the expense of their patented 11 personnel. We fans must be alert to these evolving offensive moves that McVay is planning.

And I would like to remind you that Rams are moving away from 11 personnel and toward 13 personnel. This has to further reduce the importance of WR3 in their scheming.

Some have said that Rams already had finest TE room in the league and that was before drafting Klare.

The handwriting is on the wall for those willing to just see it.

There were other players available who could have helped the next two years, you are only talking WR 3. That is a rather narrow view of the roster.

Go Rams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111

Exactly. :beercan
