Re: Re:We've all seen the tape

This is just my take so it's open season for anyone who wants to disagree.

A good holder can (and should!) adjust to a bad snap. He should catch a ball that is off target or that arrives with the laces facing the wrong direction, make the necessary adjustment(s), and get the ball on spot, on time, correct launch angle, with the laces facing the goal posts.

If any of that goes wrong - let's say, for example, the ball is placed with the laces facing directly left instead of directly at the goal post (as happened with at least one of Karty's misses this year) - I don't think there's a damn thing a kicker can do to adjust.

That ball is going to hook way left (which is what happened on that kick I mentioned) and the adjustment would be to change his planned trajectory in mid leg-swing to aim 20 yards to the right of the right upright to account for the hook that is guaranteed to happen. Considering that he's already into his leg swing as the ball is being placed it seems totally unrealistic for a kicker to take lace placement into account before making contact with the ball.

"Total operation time refers to the time it takes for the center to snap the ball, the holder to put it down and the kicker to get the ball kicked. The total operation time from snap to kick should not exceed 1.3 seconds." [www.espn.com] (I know BerendsenRam posted Meador's comment saying 2.1 seconds. That was 60 years ago. They've gotten better.)

How much time does a kicker have between when the ball is placed and when his foot hit's it? If it's more than a tenth of a second I would be surprised.

How much time does a receiver have to adjust to a poor throw?

IMO this is not even apples to oranges. This is apples to elephants territory.

Like a great WR can adjust to a poorly thrown ball and still make a terrific catch.

I remember the first thing I heard on Greg Zuerlein's great FG was Joe Buck saying, "Bad snap!"

How much, if anything, can the kicker manage what is going on around him?

I think we both saw one where the hold didn't seem to go down on spot, his plant foot slipped (turf condition or hold) and he missed the kick. I saw a couple where the ball angles we off, and he missed the kicks.

I don't recall which of those kicks were FG's or XP's - but I do recall looking at the number and posting that the percentage of mises were about the same before the last couple of games, regardless of range, XP or FG. The numbers, when combined with what we could see of the holds, indicated that the problem wasn't Karty.

Evans' improved holds toward the end of the season parallels Karty's "sudden improvement," or "getting over the rookie jitters," or whatever wrong reason is unfairly applied to his misses. At least now an increasing number are seeing what the coaches already knew and McVay revealed publicly: There were things behind the scenes that Karty had to deal with and they never lost confidence in him. As fans we should take our cue from that: neither should we.

It wasn't but a month ago that Snead was being hammered for drafting Karty who was inconsistent.
Now, suddenly, it was another brilliant move.

It is the same crowd that gives a rookie about 8 games to be fully developed and playing like a good vet before they declare failure. Heck, AD didn't start off as a killer of O's, either.

And, we need to remember that historically while a rookie can have a better than average first year, that isn't the whole story, either. It takes a couple of years at least to know what we really have.... in general.

I'm pretty impressed with the patience McVay shows in the development of players. It seems to be paying off long term.

I get your larger point, Rock.

Still, it’s gratifying to see Ram rookies excelling relative to their counterparts on other teams. That’s an apples-to-apples comparison even though it’s been only one year sample size.

Sometimes, even in their rookie year you just ‘know’.

Snead/McVay have obviously had back to back outstanding draft classes and their UDFA’s haven’t been shabby, either.

Gotta say: it sure gets old that the same crowd quickly judges rookies
