A few thoughts after sleeping on it…

Hard to watch, huh? A reality check much like getting splashed by a face full of ice water.

So many things and players that I thought were solid and above proved not to be when faced by a top team. Very sobering.

All 3 Ram phases were abused before a national audience.

93 touched on it when he said that Rams can compete well against other mediocre teams, but crumple like aluminum foil against the top teams. Fools gold, IOW.

Rams have some soul searching to do and must make some very tough decisions next offseason if they hope to once again be among top NFC teams. Such as:

Are Rams good enough at RB? Kyren has now officially got a fumbling problem and yet Corum scarcely ever sees the field.

Time to invest in an OT? Hav is getting older and already missing far too many games. McClendon isn’t the answer, not yet, anyway.

Our TE corps isn’t producing like it should. Not up to league norms, anyway. Is it talent deficit or a McVay playcalling issue? I think this is one big missed opportunity area.

Might be time to trade Kupp. Yeah, I love him, too, but he’s not the same threat anymore and he’s gobbling up 30M in salary these days. That’s money that’s needed elsewhere.

Bringing in a WR looks like it should be a high offseason priority. Snead has proven that he can find them, sooooo…

Bringing in a top boundary CB is now critical if we want Shula’s D to evolve. Maybe two CB’s, dammit!

I think Safety will be okay IF Snead can bring in a couple of top CB’s next offseason via FA or draft.

Karty is disintegrating right before our eyes. I didn’t see this coming. Didn’t matter so much in this blowout game, but in normal games a reliable kicker can turn losses into wins. Sigh…

Even Ethan Evans had a bad night, not that I think he needs replacement. But the poor play on this team last night was contagious, it seems.

I’m not sure that Stafford will be able to play long enough to see Rams fix all these things. Somehow or some way Snead needs to get Stafford’s eventual replacement on this roster.

McVay needs to look in the mirror, too. He is the HC after all. Team fell apart and I didn’t see adjustments of any kind. Rams O is getting 80% of cap dollars and turning in mediocre results almost every week. Should McVay turn over play calling duties to LaFleur? Is it smart to continue using 11-personnel so heavily, especially when opposing D’s seem to have figured out how to choke it? Maybe take another look at his RB profile philosophy? These are just some of the questions I think McVay should be asking himself.

Let’s face it, at least 3 NFC teams alone have passed Rams by and are continuing to pull away:

Lions
Eagles
Packers

And there are several others nipping at our heels, as well.

And don’t get me started with the AFC top teams.

My point being, where has that ‘McVay magic’ gone?

I no longer much care if Rams make the playoffs, tbh. I think that they should focus on developing their youngsters as best they can, McVay should strongly consider fundamental changes in his philosophies about playcalling, TE usage, etc. And Snead/McVay should be laying aggressive plans to upgrade this roster come next offseason. NOTHING should be off the table if they hope to catch up with those 3 top NFC teams.

It was always his opinion that your could run the single-wing in the NFL, that it was unstoppable, if everyone executed like they were supposed to.

Now I'm not so sure about running the single-wing in the NFL, I do think there are certain coaches who subscribe to the philosophy that you can have success running the same offeense over & over and it's unstoppable assuming the players execute it. I suspect that McVay is one of those guys. I suspect that he feels that if his 11-personel is run to perfection you don't need to make adjustments. Practice a pattern until the QB knows where his receiver is 100% of the time. And this why it works with elite route runners and students of teh game like Kupp & Puka or Woods, and why it doesn't with other players. That's why certain receivers aren't seeing the field, or get traded after one year, or why TE's aren't being targeted or why QB's just aren't catching on (or get traded). In theory it makes sense. Coach, QB & recievers all on the same page. When it works, it works. On the downside it really limits the pool of players who can run your offense and leaves you little flexibility when the defense has your number.

While I'm sure much of this is true with all coaches (who wants player who can't run your offense?) Some coaches will adject to the players strength. McVay seems more "Learn the offense or leave".

Just a thought.

I’m going to earmark this post, 3030. I think you pinpointed McVay’s MO. You can compare the perfection required of the single wing to Lombardi’s perfection requirements of the power sweep.

Didn’t McVay run a single wing high school?

Quote
Singapore Ram
I think that this discussion is quite interesting. Let me share my thoughts:

1. McVay, while everybody and anybody can always improve, is the best coach the Rams have had so far. Our team is usually competitive, at the very least. We've gone to the playoffs fairly consistently except when we've had back luck with injuries like in 22. We've gone to the Superbowl twice already and won one of those. So, for me, I'm very thankful for McVay.
2. Although I also like KW, he will never be a real game changer. Besides his recent fumbling issues, he's just doesn't have the game breaking speed that, like for example Saquon has. And, as many people have already pointed out, Blake Corum is basically the same back as KW. I think we have this type of back only because we have not had the draft capital or the team cap available to get a game changing back. These kind of backs don't come around very often so they are not cheap if they are a free agent, or you need a first round pick. Another point I'd like to make is that if you have a good passing game with a very good running back, it really puts the defense in a "pick your poison" type of situation. I saw it somewhere but KW faces the least stacked box defenses of most starting running backs. This means that defenses don't fear him and it also means that the defense has one more defender for the passing game to use against us.
3. I think many people overlook the OL injuries. Like I put in another post, I've only watched the first half so far but 2 of the 3 sacks on Stafford in the first half were because McClendan.
4. I think most of the dink and dunk is because of item #2 and #3 above. The defense can play more guys defending the pass so it makes deeper shots more difficult. And, Stafford doesn't have enough time to do so many deep shots anyway. He'd be creamed if he has to wait for long developing routes.

I hope I haven't rambled too much.

Nice very well thought out post Singapore Ram and I happen to agree with all of it. I really can't add anything since I see it pretty much the same way. lol

Keep on Rambling Singapore Ram! :beercan

I'll ramble on then!

Thank you for your comments Singapore.

I hope what you state about Corum/Kyren turns out not to be true.

"Blake Corum is basically the same back as KW"

Watching a few clips of Corum this year, I think he runs better than Kyren.
His feet/cuts are quicker and more sudden.
The last series against Arizona when everyone knew he was getting the ball every down, was impressive.
I sure want to see him in the game more often.

Don't get me wrong, Kyren is good with a desire/heart above most RBs and love his story, but . . .

We may have the "game changer" you speak of on the roster, he just may need a chance to prove it.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I know many get upset with McVay. Of course, he is not perfect. But, I feel he is getting as much out of this team as possible. I feel the overall talent on the Rams is overrated imho. McVay is limited offensively, why? OL play, they simply cannot protect Stafford. People want RB's in the pass game, they can't, Williams must pickup pass rushers constantly. Why isn't Corum getting touches? He is not near as good as Williams in pass pro. Throw to the TE, they need them to help in pass protection too much. The lack of 1st round picks is coming to roost. When you look at the Rams starting 22 and the Eagles starting 22, what Rams would the Eagles take? Puka over Dovante Smith? Verse? The Rams talent is simply not good enough to compete with the upper echelon teams. The Eagles were simply, bigger, faster, and stronger than the Rams plain and simple. Who acquires the talent Les Snead? Giving away players like Earnest Jones for peanuts, then the Titans get what a 4th? Rams have no player on the roster at the position near as good!! Snead has had many sub par trades. I could go on, but the fact remains the Rams talent is just mediocre at best. I mean you have no idea how bad it is to be there in person when they get whipped like that and the Ram fans in attendance leave in the 3rd Q

And I agree on Stafford.... my guess is he hangs it up. However, if I could get a 2025 first-round pick for him I would trade him for sure. Not only do they need to get younger but they have to get stars players that can fill those seats with people rooting for the Rams

I'm telling you guys the Rams have a tall order in this market!!

Quote
Rams43

Thoughts?

Dude, love your posts. Keep ramblinig! lol

:beercan
