The Los Angeles Rams’ plan all offseason was to start Jonah Jackson at left guard and move Steve Avila to center. The reason they signed Jackson to a three-year deal was because Avila had the position versatility to move from guard to center.

However, less than two weeks before the first game of the season, the Rams called an audible and shook up the O-line. They’ve moved Avila back to left guard and slotted Jackson in at center, a surprising decision – particularly this late in the summer.

Center is one of the most important positions on offense because of that player’s communication with the quarterback, so this move could have an impact on Matthew Stafford, too.

Unsurprisingly, he’s not worried about it. He has no concerns about Jackson’s ability to play center or Avila’s talent as a left guard.

“Yeah, I’m not too worried about it,” Stafford said on “Rams Revealed” this week. “Jonah’s a veteran player. We made a switch a couple of years ago during training camp in 2021 when I first got here. It wasn’t quite as late just because of the fact that Jonah really wasn’t practicing. Had he been practicing, I think that switch probably would’ve happened a bit earlier. But I do think we’re finding our way to get the best five out there in the best position to succeed. I have no qualms about how he’s going to play or how we’re going to play up front.”

Stafford played one year with Jackson in Detroit when Jackson was a rookie in 2020, so they do have some experience together beyond the work they got in this offseason. He also had Avila as his left guard last season; the rookie never missed a snap all year.

When healthy and available – Alaric Jackson is suspended two games and Rob Havenstein has an ankle injury – the Rams offensive line has the potential to be a top-five unit in the NFL. It may take a few weeks before we even get a chance to see all five starters together but the protection up front should be great at full strength.

Legendary Rams quarterback and Hall of Famer Kurt Warner stated in a recent interview with Talk Sport that his Greatest Show on Turf offense was better than the current Kansas City Chiefs offense, led by Patrick Mahomes.

Warner, a generally positive man in retirement, took time to praise the play of Mahomes, agreeing that the Chiefs possess a tremendous attack.

“Oh, yeah, we were better,” Warner said. “That’s for sure. I’m not sure the quarterback was better. But, overall, we were better. I mean, we had more talent … Hall of Famers all over the place.

“We did something in an era that had never been done before.”

As good as the Chiefs have been with Mahomes under center, Warner cited several factors that he believes made the Greatest Show on Turf better than Kansas City.

Warner stated that the Rams offense had more talent, a better ability to get the ball downfield and was revolutionary for their era compared to common passing attacks of today.

“We threw the ball down the field,” he said. “We pushed the envelope. It was about being accurate and making plays down the field every game.”

Warner also says that the Rams helped reshape the negative narrative behind having a pass-heavy attack, a narrative that was plaguing football at that time.

“We ushered in what is the NFL right now, with showing people that you can throw the football to win and you can consistently be good at throwing the football,” Warner said. “I think the mentality back in the day was, ‘Oh man, just bad things happen when you throw the football — incompletions and interceptions and turnovers.’

“You know, run the football and play good defense. We showed people that you could do the opposite, if you have attention to detail.”

As trailblazers, Warner and the Rams rewrote offensive philosophy in the NFL. When talking about his time in the Mike Martz offense, Warner said, “I do believe that our team was different and I haven’t seen anybody that quite equals it.”

The Greatest Show on Turf produced four Hall of Fame players, six All-Pros, two MVPs and a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.

and it's possible Lake will play in the base defense as well is when there are 5 (or more) DBs
on the field. So, we don't know for sure who takes his place when Lake is at nickel

Shock and panic set in rather quickly when Sean McVay named Kyren Williams the Rams’ punt returner a week ago. Fans and fantasy owners couldn’t believe the Rams would risk playing their star running back on special teams, causing everyone to wonder what it means for Williams’ workload.

Well, either the Rams are trolling on their first depth chart or Blake Corum is also going to get work on special teams. Corum is listed as the team’s primary kick returner on this week’s depth chart, with Jordan Whittington as the second-stringer.



Are the Rams really going to use their top two backs as their return specialists or is this just a subtle response by the team to all the outrage over Williams’ role? It’s unorthodox to have one starting running back returning kicks or punts, but having the top two backs on special teams is particularly unusual.

If the depth chart is accurate, it probably means Corum is going to get more work in the return game than Williams will. With the new kickoff setup, the goal is to have more returns and while we didn’t see a huge spike in the preseason, those games didn’t count and teams were likely just trying to avoid injuries by booting kicks into the end zone for touchbacks.

Now with the real games starting, teams will likely try to keep the ball in the field of play to prevent touchbacks that move the ball to the 30-yard line. That should lead to more returns overall. On punts, Williams can just call for a fair catch every time if he wants, thus avoiding any extra hits taken.

We’ll see who is back there to return the opening kickoff on Sunday night when the Rams face the Lions. Corum has experience in that area from his college days but it’s not extensive, returning only 18 kicks at Michigan, all in 2020 and 2021.
