Goff signed his extension in September of 2019, after the Rams lost SB53 ... but before Goff regressed.

And I know it's a technicality, but McVay doesn't sign players - Tony Pastoors does.

From [www.therams.com] : "As the club's chief negotiator, Pastoors is responsible for the team's salary cap management, contract negotiations, compliance with the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement as well as the club's financial and strategic planning."

And yes, I know that Pastoors wouldn't extend a player without McVay's recommendation. But that's the sequence: McVay recommends it, Pastoors negotiates the deal.

Yes, we all know the "sequence". lol And we all know who has all the power to make those types of decisions...especially on the offensive side of the ball and certainly at the QB position.

"Technically"? Yes, Pastoors but I think we all would agree that if McVay didn't "approve" it, Goff wouldn't have gotten that extension. I seriously doubt Pastoors would "extend" Goff on his own free will. lol

For proof, of McVay's power, look no further than how fast McVay got rid of Goff after that Cabo meeting with Stafford.

We all know it was McVay who made that final call. Pastoors would have been fired for making a decision like that on his own. Pastoors is "technically" McVays lacky. He does what he is told! lol

Always great talking with you AlbaNY! :beercan

Didn't McVay resign Goff AFTER the SB?

Quote
AlbaNY_Ram
My impression is that Goff regressed when McVay's offense evolved and Goff couldn't keep up.

In Detroit they seem to e happy featuring what Goff does well. McVay could have done that, too, but he chose to get a QB who could not only operate the 'new' offense, but who could keep up as the offense continued to evolve.

The specific changes I think McVay installed after Belichick administered that lesson in the SB: sight adjustments on routes and timing passes that require anticipation rather that reaction on the QBs part. I don't know where to look it up, but I'd bet good money that the Rams run more of both than Detroit.

Can't remember when it was but thinking it was after the SB even though Goff played like he did. That always confused me. If Goff was so bad, why resign him and the trade him away?

I was surprised how fast McVay was willing to unload after his date with Stafford in Cabo. H3ll, I think McVay would have driven Goff to Detroit himself if he had to. lol

Teams figured Rams offense out ... not all of it is on QB.

But there was something not clicking. And this is not just a few games -- over long stretches ... that Detroit game in 2018 is line of different

So, he gets a fresh start in Det
so in 48 games (too last to add in Playoff games)

48 games

he's 24-23-1 but that is misleading they were terrible at first
1,121 for 1,686 66.5 percent for 12,258 78 TDs and 27 INT ----------- 96.5

but in past 2 years 21-13 and 98.6 passer rating

He's back close to where he was ... so it was clear he had to go and it worked out for both teams.

It's an odd case of a a couple of so-so years sandwiched by a great start and a great comeback
