Did Rams coach Sean McVay even want Simpson?

Simpson said he was aware of the reaction, but it didn’t matter to him.

“I really didn’t care, to be honest with you,” Simpson told SI.com. “Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business. So, the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick, so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be, the best Ty I can be, and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Simpson says Stafford has been a good teammate in the early part of the offseason program.

“It’s great. Just sitting there in the room with Matthew, it’s super, super fun. It’s awesome. He’s just an A-plus guy, A-plus player,” Simpson said. “I think it’s really, really cool to, one, be in the room with Matthew, who has done it at a high level for so long.”

With Stafford now signed through 2027, it could be years before Simpson takes over from Stafford as the starter. But what if Los Angeles had merely reversed the order of selecting tight end Max Klare with Simpson? Would NFL analysts still be up in arms?

Thankfully, we will never know. That's because had Los Angeles not selected Simpson at 13, the Arizona Cardinals were ready to pick him at the 34th overall pick. But the point of this scenario is to call out the fact that nobody acknowledges the steal LA found in Round 2 by selecting tight end Max Klare, who could easily be a better fit for the offense than Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

Had Los Angeles not tapped the same Oregon Ducks offense for tight end Terrance Ferguson in 2025, we might be having a different conversation altogether. But Ferguson was drafted out of Oregon last season. And while he flashed some promise, he struggled to catch even half the passes thrown his way.

And he was a far more experienced collegiate tight end than Kenyon Sadiq, catching 134 passes for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Max Klare edges Kenyon Sadiq in direct comparison

LA Rams rookie tight end Max Klare essentially played two seasons for the Purdue Boilermakers and one season with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Over that time, he hauled in 114 passes for 1,329 yards and six touchdowns. But he learned to be effective without a football in his hands and was valued in the offense for his versatility.

Over three seasons, Kenyon Sadiq caught 80 passes for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns. But while Klare was the third option in Ohio State's offense behind wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, Sadiq was numero uno in the Ducks' offense.

What did analysts see in Kenyon Sadiq?

Much like his former teammate, Terrance Ferguson, Kenyon Sadiq was often described as a light tight end who could be effective with crisp route running in the NFL. But he was flagged for inconsistent catch focus, unexplained drops, and getting bullied at the line of scrimmage.

He was a combine freak, an athletic tight end who was faster than expected and whose body mass index rivals that of professional bodybuilders.

Sadiq was the best of the bunch, but was not a slam dunk by any means. His best performances in college came against inferior defenses. One Oregon fan volunteered that Sadiq was the 'King of garbage time catches.' While that seems harsh, it shows that even Ducks fans were not sold on Sadiq.

Rd 1
Kenyon Sadiq

Tight End | Oregon
What did analysts see in Max Klare?

Max Klare has a similar challenge in his draft profiles. But he had more production in college and was used in far more roles. That is, he lined up just about anywhere and everywhere to help his offense. Klare's Purdue chapter is much like Sadiq's at Oregon. But Klare added one more season at Ohio State.

Klare improved his drops at Ohio State, learning to be one offensive playmaker in a robust offense. As a result, Klare was able to sharpen his alignments, blocking, route running, and a myriad of intangibles that many rookies simply fail to address in college.

The difference? Klare produced in a crowded offense.

Rd 2
Max Klare

Tight End | Ohio State
It could be that both Sadiq and Klare flourish in the NFL, or that both crash and burn trying to realize their dreams of competing in the NFL. But the narrative has ignored the obvious for far too long. Los Angeles reinforced its offense, already the top-scorer in the NFL.

Nobody knows the future yet. But even without knowing what may be, why ignore what was? NFL pundits continue to pile on Los Angeles with faulty reasoning. Hopefully, Max Klare is better than advertised and becomes a standout in LA in his rookie season.

As always, thanks for reading.

And that has triggered a host of unsolicited commentary from the sports media talking heads. In a land of digital delivery, drive-up windows, and doom-and-gloom-biased news, the strategy for Los Angeles to draft a rookie quarterback in 2026 has been lost in the discussion.

Dan Patrick is a level-headed sports analyst. But he misses the mark completely with his recent comment about LA's decision to draft the runner-up quarterback from this year's draft class. Los Angeles has a roster bursting with offensive contributors that just scored more points on offense than any other team. But that's all deemed irrelevant on draft day.

Just like draft guru Mel Kiper's biting commentary, Patrick snarls a bit at LA's decision. And so, he shares his thoughts:

He makes the general consensus mistake here. His blinders focus on the 13th overall pick, which he argues should have netted the Horns either wide receiver Makai Lemon or tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

But nobody knows if either prospect will have more prosperity in the NFL than wide receiver CJ Danioels or tight end Max Klare. Perhaps even more importantly, neither player was likely to take the football field this season.

LA Rams continue to play chess on a checker board

It's not easy for sports analysts who know a little bit about every sport to dive into the details of one team in one professional sport. And that offers up an ideal perspective for objectivity. But the LA Rams and general manager Les Snead continue to play chess on a checkerboard.

1. Rams will stick with Matthew Stafford as long as they can (a year at a time)

The first gaffe in his discussion is the perspective that rookie quarterback Ty Simpson is somehow a plug-and-play addition to this offense. In reality, it's the very nature of Matthew Stafford's return that allowed LA to draft Simpson.

Rd 1
Ty Simpson

Quarterback | Alabama
Projected as a Day 1 prospect, almost all draft profiles named his 15 collegiate starts as a drawback. Others cited his regression during the season as a red flag. In essence, he needs coaching. Eureka! That's the scenario that he finds himself in at Los Angeles.

"One-year starters rarely “boom” so he’ll need a patient staff and a clear developmental roadmap to fill in the missing pieces."

Lance Zierleinnormal
Matthew Stafford needn't babysit the young man. His role is to drive this high-octane offense once more. And that is exactly what he will do. But Simpson will learn all the same, through Stafford's preparation, work ethic, and performance. All the while, Simpson will benefit from the coaching staff's expertise all season.

2. Rams know that they will never have a chance to draft a franchise QB again

Wouldn't it be grand if the moment that the Horns needed a rookie quarterback, one would fall to them as they stepped up to the draft podium? We might as well start that tale with 'once upon a time..." for all the good it will do. Los Angeles does not pick early enough in the draft to count on selecting a top rookie quarterback prospect.

Ty Simpson was the best prospect this team will have the chance to draft for the foreseeable future. Despite the belief that quarterbacks will be plentiful in the 2027 NFL draft, they will be off the board before LA makes a selection.

But the rush to draft quarterbacks will drive other top talent down the board, much like the 2024 NFL draft that allowed LA to select the top edge rusher in that rookie class, outside linebacker Jared Verse. So, drafting Simpson now not only affords LA a chance to coach up Simpson today, but it is a great strategy to avoid the bidding wars for quarterbacks in 2027.

Few understood LA's interest in trading uncertain picks for impact players. Few understand the decision to add a highly intelligent quarterback now to develop him into Matthew Stafford's successor tomorrow.

Yes, general manager Les Snead does things differently. But until it stops working, let's hit the pause button on trying to spout out those 'gotcha's' so quickly. It's quite likely that CJ Daniels and Max Klare will outperform the alternatives to Ty Simpson in Round 1.

As always, thanks for reading.

Williams.... might become a good 3rd down guy otherwise not enough of anything to be a very good starter

B. Corum....... no wiggle, too slow, quality back-up, will get tough short yardage

K. Turner...... good player, great tape, but too small and too limited athletically to be more than a rotational player

P. Nacua..... ceiling is an average back-up. Likely most valuable as a STs guy.

C. Kupp....... good player but too slow, not quick, can't get separation, average starter at some point

Here's what's funny. All are said to have good tape, and perform well. But, they don't have the NFL standard traits to succeed. Listen to Les and Sean, and this is exactly who they're looking for especially beginning with late round 2 guys. Excellent football players. Consistent. Really good tape.
AI view of Lynch reaction to the Simpson pick (1 reply)

I thought this was interesting. Im guessing AI uses tons of information on this subject to form this conclusion….

For John Lynch to smirk and hold back laughter during a press conference when asked about the Rams drafting Ty Simpson at No. 13 is the absolute definition of throwing stones from a glass house.
The football world hasn’t forgotten that Lynch executed arguably the most disastrous quarterback trade up in modern NFL history. Les Snead and Sean McVay used one actual draft pick—their own No. 13 selection—to secure a quarterback they believe is the future behind a 38-year-old Matthew Stafford. Lynch traded away three first-round picks and a third-round pick for a quarterback who started four games and was off the roster in two years.
A Massive Double Standard
When you look at how the two front offices operate, the criticism of the Rams' pick by anyone in San Francisco falls completely flat:
The Cost of Inaction vs. Overaction: Les Snead didn't sell the farm or compromise the future depth of the roster to get Simpson. If Simpson hits, the Rams seamlessly transition from Stafford to a young, dynamic SEC champion with elite ball security (setting the Alabama record for lowest career interception percentage). If he misses, they lost one mid-first-round pick. Lynch risked the entire structural integrity of the 49ers' roster on Trey Lance.
McVay's Offensive Infrastructure: If there is any coach in the NFL who has earned the benefit of the doubt when evaluating point-guard traits in a quarterback, it’s Sean McVay. Simpson spent his time at Alabama operating in heavy pro-style concepts, showing incredible play-action prowess and maturity by waiting his turn. McVay clearly sees a baseline of processing and technical skill that he can mold over the next two to three seasons.
The Media Reaction
While the media has had a field day with the pick—especially with analysts like Dan Orlovsky aggressively defending it as "the way high-end organizations operate"—the visual of Lynch snickering about an aggressive division rival taking a quarterback prospect is what turned it into a viral joke.
Lynch has built a phenomenal roster in San Francisco, but his track record at evaluating the sport's most important position is entirely buoyed by the luck of a compensatory 7th-round pick. Snead and McVay have won a Lombardi Trophy with their aggressive, conviction-based approach to personnel, and history suggests they know exactly what kind of traits function best in their building.

Measuring 6-foot-1 and 327 pounds, Keenan can do that if anything.

Opposing team has the ball, fourth-and-one at the Rams' 49-yard line. That could be just the spot for Keenan.

Last year's Day 3 DT pick, Ohio State fifth-rounder Ty Hamilton, did not give the Rams much substance as a rookie, especially against the run. It wasn't a big role - only 138 snaps - but in 2026, Keenan will be coming for his roster spot if Hamilton can't prove he can clog the gaps up front.

Tim Keenan III could give Rams rotational oomph immediately

As a prospect, Keenan arguably has less upside than Hamilton did entering the league a year ago. The Alabama nose tackle received a lower prospect grade and athletic score and is more limited in what he can provide. Listed at 6-foot-3, 303 pounds, Hamilton is more agile in the pass rush. Keenan is almost exclusively suited to play the run.

However, Hamilton's struggles in that area could open the door for Keenan to leapfrog him on the depth chart. In limited reps last season, Hamilton earned a ghastly 29.6 Pro Football Focus grade in run defense. Against the pass, he earned a mark of 49.9. PFF credited him with three total pressures, two quarterback hits, and two stops in 14 games.

That's not a high bar to clear. Keenan won't do much in the pass rush, and there are concerns about his length even against the run, but his sheer mass in the middle could create a niche for him in the Rams' rotation. All he has to do is show he can slow down opposing rushing attacks in short-yardage situations.

The Horns already have Poona Ford locking down the lead role at nose tackle. Tyler Davis is an excellent, versatile backup. What they could use is someone who can give them a few snaps per game in run-heavy scenarios, or step into the rotation temporarily due to injury.

The opportunity should be there. Hamilton earned 10-plus snaps in all but four of his appearances last season. But his projected fourth-round potential didn't show up as a rookie. Now Hamilton's share of playing time is up for grabs between him and Keenan.

Keenan has a size advantage on both Hamilton and Davis, who can slide over to play the three-technique. As a pure nose tackle, he should take inspiration from Ford, a former undrafted free agent who entered the league out of Texas at just 5-foot-11.

While Keenan lacks Ford's disproportionately broad wingspan, he shares similar limitations as a late-draft prospect with physical shortcomings. Ford's 5.60 prospect grade was even lower than Keenan's. Look at him now, PFF's fourth-ranked interior defender last season.

All that to say that Keenan is a worthy challenger to Hamilton for a spot in next season's d-line rotation.
