Scot McCloughan dubs Ty Simpson a “career backup” (1 reply)

So many questions about Ty from so many people. Some will counter with "they don't know" or "I trust McVay" but that won't erase the questions until he actually plays and that might not be for 2-3 years. The biggest question for most is why was he taken so high? Usually a QB picked that high is expected to be a sure thing starter.

I have no idea who Scot McCloughan is but he isn't saying anything many others have already said. I am hoping Ty turns out to be a very good starting QB for us. He's a smart kid, coaches son and has some talent that could carry over to the NFL level.

It's going to be interesting to see if that actually happens.

Scot McCloughan dubs Ty Simpson a “career backup”

link

Rams quarterback Ty Simpson didn’t slide far enough in the first round to make that into a legitimate source of motivation. If he’s looking for it elsewhere, he’s in luck.

Former two-time NFL General Manager Scot McCloughan recently directed sharp criticism at the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

“I think the quarterback from Alabama is overdrafted,” McCloughan said on the Team 980 in D.C., via Valentina Martinez of the New York Post. “But it’s the position alone, you know. I think, not being a guru, but he’s like J.J. McCarthy. He’s like Mac Jones. He’s a career backup.”

(It’s been a week of catching strays for McCarthy. First, Dianna Russini says he “sucks” in the footage from her January traffic stop. Now this.)

“Ideally, he might start, but that’s because of where his pick was and they want to prove everybody right, you know, type of thing,” McCloughan said. “And that’s not the way you should build a roster. Not at all.”

McCloughan knows a thing or two about scouting; he served as G.M. of the 49ers from 2008 to 2009, a personnel executive in Seattle from 2010 to 2013 (when they built a Super Bowl champion), and Washington G.M. from 2015 to 2016.

Then again, Sean McVay knows a thing or two about quarterbacks. And this is the first potential starter the Rams have drafted since McVay arrived in 2017. (He inherited Jared Goff, and in 2021 the Rams traded for Matthew Stafford.)

Time will tell what Simpson will become. With Stafford talking about playing into his 40s, it could be a while before McCloughan is proven right, or wrong.

Gone forever.

Just got a text from a cousin... he dropped his phone in Shaver Lake early this last May. Yesterday a diver in Shaver Lake, looking for fishing lures, found his phone.... turned it on and saw a number..... called it. Today my cousin picked up his phone and it's working perfectly.

My cousin, BTW, is the luckiest human on earth. I think he's won every single raffle he's ever bought a ticket for. At a local club I belong too they have a couple raffle's every year.... main prize is a gun..... my cousin wins it every year. I think he's won a dozen guns or far? Maybe more. Ticket sales have fallen off drastically.. no reason to buy one because my cousin is going to win it. - JamesJM

New Horrible Thought (6 replies)

Hi Everyone,

I was thinking along today and inside my brain a sudden thought occurred to me that actually surprised myself.

I was thinking about the defense and the DL in particular, and inside of that thought I was thinking about how much pressure could the line generate at the moment with Turner, Young, Fiske and now Garrett.

It suddenly occurred to me that the above 4 players should be able to generate a lot of pressure as they are. So, my sudden horrible thought was "what if McSnead don't really see much of an advantage to adding AD?" You know, if AD says, "yeah, I'll play, just send me 25 million (as an example) this year and no problem." Then McSnead may look at this number and compare it to how much more they are going to get compared to what they have now (with Garrett) and say, "hey, that's way too much." On the other hand, all in is all in.

So, of course I'd love for AD to come back! But can the Rams afford to pay AD what he probably will want? I don't know, but it might be pretty doubtful in my opinion. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks.

Who's Retired...Took Time Off...And Returned To Work? (AD Related) (no replies)

And when I mean, "took time off," I'm thinking 6 - 12 months as opposed to a glorified 3-week vacation.

I was fortunate enough to retire last summer, but I always knew that I'd return to the workforce because: 1) I was only 55 y.o. and would likely want something to do; and, 2) I spent most of my career in government service and I'm short credits to qualify for the SS benefits that might help augment my pension.

Well, after spending 9 months off, I returned to work in April: part-time; remote; and, I chose how much I'd like to work (typically 12 - 15 hours per week).

But despite what I would call favorable employment terms, I still find it difficult - not the actual job. But just the whole act of...well, WORKING and everything that goes along with it.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

And linking this to AD...

Even though it's a game, I do believe that professional sports IS A FULL-TIME JOB.

And even though working out is part of his lifestyle, I have to believe that the routine he's likely established with his family and free time over the past 2 years would be extremely difficult to completely give up and re-dedicate himself to the grind (because he wouldn't half-azz it).

What do the other retirees on the board think?

Goldstein, an attorney representing the woman, told judge Liza Bercovici in a Los Angeles County court room on Wednesday that his client “never served Mr. Jackson” and wished to “dissolve” the temporary restraining order that she got against Jackson on June 10.

When Bervocici asked if the woman had received “any pressure of any kind” to make her decision, Goldstein responded, “Of course not.”

He later added that she made her choice on her own free will.

“In that case, this matter is dismissed,” Bercovici said during the court proceedings. “Any restraining order currently in existence will be declared null and void as of this date.”

Bercovici said the issue will be “dismissed without prejudice,” meaning the woman can refile in the future if she chooses.

It’s unclear why the woman no longer wanted to pursue the matter, Goldstein declined to comment on the case following the hearing when asked by The California Post.

In her initial application for the restraining order, the woman — identified in the documents as Jackson’s pregnant ex-girlfriend — alleged that Jackson put his hands on her on June 8 during a heated dispute over a phone at their West Hills home.

The woman claimed that during the incident, she told Jackson “to be careful because I’m pregnant,” but she alleged he responded, “I don’t give a f—k.”

The 6-foot-7, 338-pound Jackson was arrested over the woman’s claims, though a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office told The California Post on June 18 that it will not be charging Jackson with felonies over the allegations.

However, Jackson is still facing the possibility of misdemeanor charges, as a rep for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office said in a statement to The Post that it currently has Jackson’s case and is reviewing it.

Jackson, who signed a $57 million contract extension with the Rams last year, has not publicly commented on the woman’s claims.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell ranks their group of receivers, tight ends, and running backs above-average, 11th in the NFL, but that's only good for last in the division and three spots lower than Seattle's placement a year ago.

Here's why it probably doesn't matter much: if the Seahawks repeat as Super Bowl champions, it will be for the same reason that they won the first time. Jaxson Smith-Njigba is a one-man offense and that defense, which last year finished first in points allowed and sixth in yards, is a force to be reckoned with. It won't be because the offense is stacked from top to bottom.

Naturally, Seattle fans will point out that the team finished third in points and eighth in yards last season. That's all well and good, but it's also worth noting that while the other teams in the division improved their playmaking stock - the Rams really didn't, but they just led the league in points and yards and kept all their relevant pieces - the Seahawks did not. While that's something to keep in mind, it's hardly a reason to point and laugh.

Seahawks' lack of All-Pro offensive playmakers can't distract Rams from what counts

There is, of course, a reason Seattle trails the Rams, Cardinals, and 49ers in Barnwell's rankings (which, notably, does not include quarterback play). The receiving corps isn't all that threatening outside of Smith-Njigba - the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. 33-year-old Cooper Kupp and Rashid Shaheed are fine receivers. That's about it.

AJ Barner is an excellent tight end. Tight-end room summary complete.

Most prominently, the Seahawks got worse in the running back room by letting their Super Bowl MVP, Kenneth Walker III, walk out the door in free agency. Rookie Jadarian Prince, the 32nd pick in this year's draft, does not qualify as a 'replacement.' Neither does free-agent signing Emanuel Wilson, the former Packers backup. Zach Charbonnet tore his ACL in the playoffs and is expected to miss considerable time this season.

So, right, this feels like a perfect opportunity to take out some of that NFC Championship Game frustration on a bitter rival. Rams fans know better, though, than to take any real comfort from the Seahawks' disadvantage in offensive playmaking power. Seattle still has JSN. Sam Darnold is a solid, starting-caliber quarterback (even if he did lead the league in turnovers last year).

That doesn't mean the Seahawks will be a mediocre offense. Um, no, they won't be. Despite losing Walker, Charbonnet's injury, and the improvements in the division around them, this will still be an easily above-average group.

And more critically, Seattle doesn't need anything more than that to contend for another championship. The defense is just that good, and while they did lose personnel on that side of the ball, including cornerback Riq Woolen, the group returns largely intact. That pass rush remains monstrous. The secondary is top-tier.

The Seahawks remain a high-end Super Bowl contender right behind the Rams, and L.A. would be foolish to forget that.

Well, the Los Angeles Rams were miles behind in special teams play last season. Whatever could go wrong seemingly did. Poor special teams performance shot the Horns in the foot week after week.

The Rams began tweaking the unit midway through the 2025 season. Those changes continued into the 2026 offseason. In addition to boosting the player personnel, the Rams hired a new special teams coaching duo, Bubba Ventrone and his assistant Kyle Hoke. The question is whether those adjustments are enough, or whether L.A. has merely applied a band-aid to a compound fracture.

Multiple losses last year can be traced back to special teams miscues: missed kicks, botched blocking, terrible tackling, and awful penalties. Fans saw it all. The new crew is under significant pressure to produce immediate results.

Rams' minor improvements should fork over major results

The good news is that they should have every opportunity to flip the script.

1. Retaining kicker Harrison Mevis

In the first eight games, Rams kicker Joshua Karty missed one-third of his field-goal attempts. His replacement, Harrison Mevis, made 92.3 percent. That's quite an improvement and resulted in an easy decision to bring back Mevis in 2026.

While kickers can go ice cold at any moment, Mevis does bring a solid track record from the UFL. Seeing as the Rams made no move to stage a competition at kicker, they appear confident trotting out Mevis as the guy.

2. Adding long snapper Joe Cardona

Blocking duties fall to the long snapper, an important communicator with his teammates on the special teams offensive line. That is significant given the Rams' woes with blocked kicks last season. Midway through the year they replaced Alex Ward with former Rams veteran Jake McQuaide. McQuaide seemed to hard-halt blocked kicks upon his arrival.

But in the offseason, L.A. made a more permanent move by signing veteran long snapper Joe Cardona. That's a win for Ventrone and his crew.

3. Improved kick coverage

A healthy Shaun Dolac coupled with Cardona and ex-Lions linebacker Grant Stuard, an underrated free-agent addition, Rams special teams should see a dramatic upgrade in tackling.

Punt and kickoff coverage has been the bane of this group for several years. Hopefully L.A. has figured out how to fix the problem.

4. Fewer penalties

Frequent poorly timed penalties were among the Rams' most frustrating special teams struggles. Big returns were called back due to holding penalties far from the play. Often, penalties resulted from other underlying flaws, like deficient blocking. The infusion of veterans and a new special teams coach should help fix that.

The Rams' 2025 special teams performance was a train wreck. Fans can point to several losses, including in the NFC Championship Game, as a result. The above improvements needn't catapult the Horns from worst to first. Simply fixing egregious errors should be enough to turn the corner.

As always, thanks for reading.

All 86 Rams players, ranked - Turf Show Times Articles (7 replies)

First - props to BR for posting the article link in the Chronicles forum.

Linky

Interesting take on the Rams roster. Some high, some low.

Off the top of my head, too high: AJ Acuri (even though I'm hoping he breaks out finally), Sheldon. Too low: Myles Garrett [ honestly, I thought he'd be #1.

All 86 Rams players, ranked
by Kenneth Arthur
Jun 29, 2026, 3:12 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Rams have 86 players on the roster as of today. Can you name all of them? You will be able to after you read this.

Although ranking players is rather impossible, abstract, and unnecessary, the reason I did it for the current Rams roster is not about assigning values or playing favorites. It’s so that every Rams fans who finds this article will have a better idea of what names to watch in training camp, decide for themselves who they want to root for to make the 53-man roster and practice squad, and come up with their own opinions on who should be ranked and how high or low they should fall.

Nobody can rank Rams players except for Sean McVay.

Well, I did it anyway.

71-86: Undrafted Free Agent Rookies

Undrafted free agents can, and often do, make the final 53-man roster. Most of them will end up on the practice squad, if they survive training camp at all. Being ranked at the bottom of this list is not meant to imply that the player has no shot at the roster or practice squad.

The ranking is merely based on a lack of information relative to the other 70 guys on the roster right now. Some of these players are 100% more important and relevant than guys ranked ahead of them. They’re victims of circumstance: They have never had a training camp before and they went undrafted. By this time next year, several of these players could prove to be hugely important.

This is merely an initial list of undrafted free agents who are currently on the roster and there’s nowhere to go but up; G Chad Lindberg got a $15k guarantee, second-highest in the class, and has already been waived. However, I’ve still ranked the top-3 UDFAs by their guarantee, led by TE Dan Villari.

86. OLB Eddie Walls III
85. RB Dean Connors,
84. CB Nyzier Fourqurean
83. CB Drey Norwood
82. OLB Darryl Peterson III
81. OL Bryce Henderson
80. C Austin Blaske
79. QB Matthew Caldwell
78. DT Jaxson Moi
77. S Nick Anderson
76. LB Nikhai Hill-Green
75. TE Rohan Jones
74. OLB Wesley Bailey
73. CB Az’Zillion Hamilton ($5k gtee)
72. DT Payton Zdroik ($9k gtee)
71. TE Dan Villari ($45k gtee)
So this the first 16 players on the list.

Who should be ranked higher from this list?
Tell me in the comments.

I’m slotting longsnapper Joe Cardona at 70 and yes, he will make the roster. It just goes to prove to you: This list is NOT based on likelihood of making the roster.

Longsnappers are largely interchangeable. It’s good that L.A. has Cardona instead of the problems they had at longsnapper last year though.

The rest are UDFAs going into year 2. It doesn’t mean Tanner Ingle is “worse” than someone ranked ahead of him. But we had to start somewhere.

70. LS Joe Cardona
69. WR Mario Williams
68. RB Jordan Waters
67. S Nate Valcarcel
66. DT Bill Norton
65. TE Mark Redman
64. OL Wyatt Bowles
63. DB Alex Johnson
62. WR Tru Edwards
61. CB Cam Lampkin
60. WR Brennan Presley
59. S Tanner Ingle
Presley made the most noise in the 2025 preseason. So did Ingle, but he only managed a handful of snaps. Will that go up in 2026?

46-58: It’s time to “Find a Way”

These players are mostly veterans who have yet to really establish themselves as 53-man regulars, for the most part, plus L.A.‘s two late-round picks, CJ Daniels and Tim Keenan.

I know that some people have already slotted Daniels into a 2026 Pro Bowl spot, because after all there are sixth-round receivers as good as Puka Nacua like six times a year, right? But let’s see if the 24-year-old rookie can earn a role on offense in any capacity this season first. Compare that to say, Xavier Smith, who is ranked higher.

Widely hated for muffing those punts last year, Smith had 303 yards last season and is still the front-runner to return punts. He’s not a part of L.A.‘s long-term plans, but Xavier Smith is more likely than Daniels to be in their 2026 plans.

Tyler Scott is a new addition, a former fourth-round pick by the Bears. He has great speed and is the same age as Daniels. He might be one to watch.

Stetson Bennett probably isn’t one to watch. Will the Rams make a veteran QB addition soon?

58. OL David Quessenberry
57. WR Tyler Scott
56. LB Tomon Fox
55. OLB Keir Thomas II
54. DT Tim Keenan III
53. WR CJ Daniels
52. DE Larrell Murchison
51. QB Stetson Bennett
50. OL Justin Dedich
49. C Beaux Limmer
48. OL Dylan McMahon
47. LB Elias Neal
46. RB Ronnie Rivers
Will Rivers return kicks this season, or will Sean McVay go with someone younger?

39-45: Is there potential for potential?

None of these players are starters. It’s possible some of them won’t make the 53-man roster. We’ve seen flashes from players like Konata Mumpfield, Shaun Dolac, Josh Wallace, and Ty Hamilton.

We didn’t see anything from Jarquez Hunter. Is his job in danger just a year after being a fourth-round pick?

45. RB Jarquez Hunter
44. DT Ty Hamilton
43. S Jaylen McCollough
42. CB Josh Wallace
41. LB Shaun Dolac
40. WR Konata Mumpfield
39. WR/PR Xavier Smith
Who do you think will break out from this group of seven?

22-38: Backups or Starters?

In addition to L.A.‘s two special team kickers, who I just decided to slot at 32 and 33 because they’re important, but maybe they’re not elite, this list has a lot of players who could be starters but might be slotted for backup roles in 2026.

Take Blake Corum for instance:

In our Tournament of Ram-pions bracket, some people felt that Corum should advance over Kyren Williams. Others feel that Williams is vastly underrated. Williams won the matchup easily. But Corum was on a tear at the end of last regular season.

What about Terrance Ferguson vs. Max Klare? If Ferguson was mostly kept on the bench because of McVay’s apprehension to play rookies, does that mean that he will play a lot more than Klare? Or was Klare drafted because Ferguson’s lack of production was indicative of a bigger concern?

Is Speights a good-enough linebacker? Or did the Rams sign Grant Stuard to replace him?

Only time will tell.

38. CB Emmanuel Forbes
37. LB/ST Grant Stuard
36. TE Tyler Higbee
35. T A.J. Arcuri
34. OL Keagen Trost
33. K Harrison Mevis
32. P Ethan Evans
31. DE Tyler Davis
30. QB Ty Simpson
29. OLB Josaiah Stewart
28. WR Jordan Whittington
27. LB Omar Speights
26. DE Desjuan Johnson
25. TE Davis Allen
24. TE Max Klare
23. TE Terrance Ferguson
22. RB Blake Corum
The run on tight ends on this list was un-planned, which is also kind of fitting for the Rams.

11-21: Self-Explanatory

As a reminder, many of these rankings are based on how Rams fans voted in the tournament. These aren’t just my opinions--these are largely based on the opinions of the fan base that were shared with me.

A player like Davante Adams could end up in the top-5 on some days, but nearly 34, is already defying the odds. Comparatively, maybe it’s Braden Fiske who is too low. Or Kam Kinchens. Players with much more room to grow.

21. LB Nate Landman
20. TE Colby Parkinson
19. DT Poona Ford
18. C Coleman Shelton
17. DE Braden Fiske
16. S Kam Kinchens
15. G Steve Avila
14. WR Davante Adams
13. S Kam Curl
12. DT Kobie Turner
11. RT Warren McClendon

When I ran the initial rankings behind the scenes, I actually had to fight to get Davante Adams into the tournament at all. Kobie Turner had some votes, but also mostly from me.

1-10: Well, it’s the Top-10

The top-four seemed obvious from the start:

Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Trent McDuffie, and Myles Garrett. And always in that order.

Personally, I voted for Garrett over McDuffie. But this order makes sense. I also think Puka has a case for being number one.

Kevin Dotson made a valiant effort to crack the top-4, but stood little chance.

10. RB Kyren Williams
9. OLB Byron Young
8. LT AJ Jackson
7. CB Jaylen Watson
6. S Quentin Lake
5. G Kevin Dotson
4. OLB Myles Garrett
3. CB Trent McDuffie
2. WR Puka Nacua
1. QB Matthew Stafford
Who would be in your top-10? Let’s compare lists in the comments.
