Interesting. How life's paths often change dramatically. In college I joined the Marine PLC program which was a Marine Corps officer program for college seniors accepted for enrollment. Upon completion of your senior year you attend basic training at Quantico Virginia. From there your are a commissioned second lieutenant. This was in 1963 at the very beginning of the Viet Nam engagement. Unfortunately-or fortunately- I became seriously ill during my senior year and could not complete my final exams. The marine corp translated my INC. grades as an F and I was unable to attend Quantico and finish the PLC program. When I did graduate I was engaged to Barb and shortly married. I was then under the Kennedy deferment. Shortly afterwards I was a father and subject to another deferment. Had I successfully completed the PLC program I would have been in Viet Nam during our entry into the combat field in 1965 at the time the attrition rate of Second Lieutenant was abysmally high. I likely would not have returned to marry Barb, have a son and later two grandchildren.
