Mercedes wouldn't sign Ricciardo two yeas ago and Ferrari wouldn't sign him this time because teams don't want two #1 drivers and have to deal with ego clash. So they sign a wingman to be the #2 so not to upset their star. For that reason Meredes won't sign Vettel (a 4 time world champion) and he will likely retire from the sport rather then drive for one of the middle of the pack teams. Its just crazy.
