It's not at all rare for songs to include instruments we don't have in the band. Some time you just 'get by'... but sometime it leaves a gapping hole, and sounds not quite right.

Any instrument can do what I'm about to describe for a drummer - - not having a specific instrument can affect the rhythm.... which I often compensate for by adding notes to keep the rhythm sounding the same, or at least similar. Example... Lynard Synard has a keyboard player... when we play any of their songs I often add notes to mimic the 'rhythm', (on drums I can't replicate the notes, (generally.. it can be done with great difficulty ), to keep the flow of the song going.... important for us because we play strictly for 'dancers'.

So often I'm playing two, even three, instruments at the same time... at least as far as rhythm. - JamesJM
