My guess is..

that anything related to bass should go through a larger speaker.. but we've run kick through 12" monitors with success, so not sure what was up.. Yeah, you're right tho - I've heard the sound behind the drum kit with amps on either side.. its kind of a mushy mess, to me.. tough to distinguish what's going on.. I know all the drummers I've worked with always have a TON of guitar through their monitors for just that reason..

As far as I go, I have the Marshall just screaming onstage.. and I have 1 or 2 monitors just for me and THEY are SCREAMING guitar as loud as they'll go with nothing else but snare drum through them as loud as a dump truck.. that's just so I can keep in time.. with the Marshall and the monitors blasting guitar so loud, I can't hear the snare onstage at all, so its gotta be blasted through my monitor.. nobody comes near my side of the stage - its that loud..
