It's very common for fans to criticize Ringo... and lay into him for lack of technique.... and it's easy because it has some 'truth in it'
But I don't know any drummer, myself included, that doesn't think Ringo was one of the best ever. No, he'll never get around a kit the way Neil does, certainly not like Lang, or Weckle, or Beauford or Portnoy... and he's not even in the same world as Rich.... and none of that matters...
because...
He plays 'music', in all it's complexity, and perfectly appropriate to each individual song. He has great originality.... even if 'simple', he can be incredibly unique.
He has an amazing ear... although I can't honestly say for sure it was Ringo tuning his drums never the less... .the sound he varied from song to song, (not so much the very early stuff), was amazing and so perfectly appropriate.
I don't often listen to Ringo to hear Ringo... I admit, but that's because it's not so much what he's doing as an individual but rather what he's doing to accompany his band. - JamesJM
