My sister and brothers live out of state and we have never ever traveled to visit one another for holidays in my adult life. Our parents are deceased, and I have no living aunts and uncles. We have cousins scattered all over the U.S. but we really don't know them. So... it's just me, Frank, my 2 adult kids, and 3-yr old grandson (whose palette only consists of about 5-6 different foods, no kidding). When Kara got married, we found it was easier for her to have Thanksgiving dinner with her husband's family, and Christmas dinner with mine.
All that being said, a couple of years ago, Frank and I started having a non-traditional Thanksgiving meal. Since it's just the two of us and we watch NFL football all day and night, we ditched the traditional meal and started having football-watching food instead. It's easy, we can have exactly what WE want and not worry about trying to please anybody, and we can munch on it all day.
Today we're having:
Wings
Super Nachos
BBQ chicken sandwiches
Onion dip
coleslaw
fresh baby carrots
chocolate cake
Iced tea & soft drinks
I always make plenty so I don't have to cook for a few days afterwards. Works for us! Now, Christmas dinner is a whole different thing. For Christmas, my little family gathers together to open gifts and we'll sit down to a meal with all the traditional dishes.
