..on the song.. if its AC/DC or something else fairly simple, the band can gel on it in the first time we play it together - provided everyone has individually learned their parts well.. Stuff that's more complicated will take a few more times together.. Generally we have a new tune down pretty tight by the end of the first practice with it.. we'll go through it maybe 3 times, go on and do the rest of the set, then come back and do it 2-3 more times at the end of the practice..
AC/DC is the easiest - cuz they usually don't play more than 3-4 chords in a song.. some stuff is easy for the band, but hard for me - like Dokken "Tooth and Nail".. the band has it easy and I do, as well, up until the solo, which is a pain in the keyster.. So, I hafta practice that one quite often on my own and as often as possible with the band, cuz if I get one note off during the solo, which is really fast, then I'm hopelessly lost..
I don't think we do any tunes that we haven't been able to bang out after one practice together - sometimes we'll learn 2-3 in one night.. now, that also includes us individually learning each song, on our own, on our own time, then getting together and getting it tight together.. I can learn the majority of the guitar parts in a song in one sitting.. Usually I'll learn it from memory, then go back with the CD (or sometimes youtube) and perfect it..
Solos are the biggest pain.. if its a solo where the guy is just jamming, then I can just jam, as well - kind of make stuff up as I go in the same key.. but if its a well-known solo, then I hafta learn it note for note, which can take quite some time to learn and play it smoothly - like Tooth and Nail.. Lot of technique, lot of parts to learn, lots to make smooth - especially trying to run around on stage while playing it..
