My son agreed to attend College of Idaho in Caldwell Id -primarily because of their ski team. We drove him there and went through all the opening stuff and visited his dorm room, etc. After saying good buy we snuck around to watch afar hidden in a group of trees-to see if he would make friends, etc. My wife thought we were nuts and kept tugging at me to go. I couldn't. After all he had just graduated from H.S. and was leaving us for the first time. Turns out he loved the college and made life long friends. He even returns now and then to the same dorm room to re-live old memories. Basically a long one day drive to Caldwell so we never felt it was "too far" away if you catch my drift.
