pretty sure several members on this board have seen this: A Historical Marker on HWY 33 near Coalinga, Ca. The marker notes the location of Joaquin Murietta's death, chased down by a posse. But actually... the true place where met Joaquin met his demise is not very close to the marker.... some 10 miles away, I believe? Perhaps further.
Here's another...although I think the plaque is missing today.... "The Original Location Of The City Of Fresno". It's on hwy180 somewhat near Mendota and my hometown of Tranquillity. But it's NOT the actual location. In this case, however, it makes sense because the actual location is pretty much inaccessible. The actual location is on some land I used to own... about 3 miles from my house.
So what am I getting at? Well.... this annoys me. Sure, I understand it can't be helped but never the less when I stop at those historical markers, (which I almost always do), it annoys the hell out of me to read "Near Here" or "7 miles SW of here".
As anal as I am it's a miracle I'm not strung out on drugs.
