My two daughters and their families live in Thousand Oaks so, at 3 a.m. Friday morning, they were ordered to evacuate. Since every motel and hotel within 50 miles was booked solid due to the hundreds of thousands of evacuees looking for lodging, my family, all eight of them, slept in our small house -- in our one guest bed, on our couches, and some on the floor. Fortunately for them, the fire skirted their neighborhood, sparing their homes, and is now many miles away but reportedly still out of control. Both daughters and their families are now back in their Thousand Oaks homes, but they say the air is very smoky and they are remaining indoors.
