In general aviation it's mandatory to do a complete overhaul every "X" amount of hours, varying a little with the type of engines. First they'll to a top overhaul... then a major.

In the Air Force they call it "Phased" or "Periodic" maintenance or inspections.

Our vehicles have the same periodic maintenance....just peek into that huge book called your vehicle manual.
