Most of the people that live near me are fans of Mexico. Good fans too.... very enthusiastic, very loyal, the type that 'stay until the end'... never giving up hope. And they have to start by playing Germany. yikes.
Well.... Portugal tied Spain... Iceland tied Argentina.... I think 'never saying die' is a good thing.
My good friend from Switzerland is also facing a tough opening game... perhaps the toughest of all... Brazil. BUT... my friend from Switzerland is only 'semi-warm' to Switzerland... I'm not sure if he has a 'favorite'... he roots for Portugal, (he's from Portugal), but he seems to be 'against' certain teams more than 'for' anyone in particular. Lot of fans like that these days... even here in the USA, I think. Which leads me to this:
There has been a shift, I think, in the way fans approach sports..... today I mostly, almost entirely, hear fans of ANY sport slamming other teams more than bragging about their own, or even discussing their own favorite. I'm not saying 'good' or 'bad' here.... I don't know.... but it does seem different to me, different than it 'used' to be. Not that fans didn't ALWAYS slam other teams... just the % of time spent doing so compared to reveling in their own team's accomplishments.
Well, back to the World Cup:
Tomorrow I'm definitely a Mexico fan.... should they pull it off... even a tie.... there may be free taco's and burrito's in it for me.
