As you know I dropped DirecTV quite a while back and since then I've been exploring, testing, etc. NOTE: I'm not suggesting to ANYONE to drop DirecTV... which offers the most, no doubt about it... not to mention Sunday Ticket... maybe worth it for that alone.

But it's expensive, and they pizzed me off, so I quit them.

I have both an AppleTV and a FireStick... that's a bit redundant, you don't need both actually... and others are just as good, like Roku. This isn't a review of these media players... to each his or her own.

I currently subscribe to 4? I think 4 services. Hulu, Netflix, SlingTV, and Amazon Prime. They're good, quite good... a wealth of programming... but the kicker came when I bought:

<<drum roll>>

AirTV. They make two units... one is the AirTV Player... same as AppleTV, Firestick, etc. I didn't get that one but rather I bought their plain AirTV instead... here's what it does:

You have to buy a separate Over The Air Indoor Antenna, (they are very cheap).... you plug the antenna into the AirTV unit and it connects to your home WiFi. THEN... you download the AirTV App... IOS or Android, they have both versions... and PRESTO.. you have FREE Over The Air broadcasts. For me this was FANTASTIC, here's why:

I live in the boonies so the broadcast towers are 55 miles from home, as the crow flies. Setting up an indoor antenna doesn't work well. They are rated to 50 miles so I'm over that to begin with PLUS... you have to set them up next to your tv, which for me means the middle of the house.. lot of walls to go through. I was getting about 40 channels, not bad... but I'd have to tweak the antenna, turn it, to get the best signal. Not anymore...

Because the AirTV connects to your WiFi you can set it up anywhere in your house... meaning I set it up in a room that allows a window mount pointing directly at the broadcast towers.. no walls to go thru. The difference: I now get 110 channels and all of them perfectly in the clear.

Then I downloaded the AirTV app to all three of my AppleTV's and today?

I've got more channels than Morgan Freeman has freckles. AND... for a fraction of the price. I think Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and SlingTV come to total of about $45 per month, maybe a little more. I was paying $150 per month for DirecTV for fewer channels BUT AGAIN... no Sunday Ticket. That's a killer.

Note: Amazon Prime I mainly have for shopping, not video... the video is just a bonus. SlingTV I'm still testing... not a big selection but some things the others do not have.

I'm a happy camper. - JamesJM
