I saw this one.
And I am, admittedly, disappointed in myself BECAUSE... I wasn't as keen on this movie as I should have been/am. the movie is universally praised and I think for very good reason... and yet... while I think it was an excellent film it didn't 'wow' me. That may change, however, because...
I find that as each day goes by after having seen it - it grows on me.
Can a movie be 'realistic' and 'surreal' at the same time? Those things seem opposed to me and yet that's how I saw the movie. Maybe that was the intent? Or maybe realism dealing with such extraordinary circumstances IS that way by nature? Yeah, I can buy that.
Also... I had a somewhat difficult time following the movie because I was watching it with one of my grandson's and he has this tendency to ask questions during movies and asks them non-stop. Yes, I'm going to watch it again.
I may have mentioned this... I wrote about it somewhere.... but one thing that turned me off from the very start of Dunkirk turned out to be error on my part. It was the 'modern' and 'colorful' look to Dunkirk. Then I read that 'modern' and 'colorful' was precisely how Dunkirk looked in those days and in fact the very same buildings, and colors, were used in the film. I guess I was/am of the mindset that WWII took place in Black and White.
So anyway... this is a movie that I think, hope, I will enjoy and appreciate MUCH more on the second viewing. - JamesJM
